Applying the Elaboration Likelihood Model of Persuasion to a Videotape-Based Eating Disorders Primary Prevention Program
This experiment applied principles from the Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasion to the prevention of eating disorders. Female adolescents were told to watch either only a preventive video tape, watch a video and have a post-video activity such as verbal discussion and a written exercise, or simply undergo no intervention whatsoever. Significantly more body image improvements occurred at post-video and follow-up in the intervention groups compared to those who underwent no intervention at all. The conclusion was that there were no differences among intervention groups or between girls with high or low elaboration likelihood.

Design: The Transtheoretical model and the Social Cognitive theory are essential aspects to our campaign ads. One of the main objectives for the brochure was to further educate the public of the disease and the recourses people have at their disposal in order to get help. To accomplish this goal, we used facts explaining what anorexia is and signs to look for in order to appeal to the precontemplation step in the Transtheoretical model. People who may not understand that their behavior is unhealthy and problematic may be able to relate to the symptoms and begin to question their behavior and whether or not they should begin taking action to better themselves.…

In Saunder's "In Persuasion Nation" several vignettes are presented that subsequently spiral into absurd instances of normalized violence with commercial like qualities. In these stories men and women will die and murder for while proclaiming ther love and yearning for a delicious taste of name-brand products like Doritos™. Taken to the extreme, these examples show how modern consumerism and capitalism have created a manipulative force in advertisements. Modern advertisements use persuasive techniques to subtly influence people's interest in their products, however in doing so they have normalized outlandish behavior in the pursuit of the modern goods. For example, in one story a man's elderly grandparents beat him while a Doritos bag decapitates…

Journal 2, Persuasion. I have used persuasion in the past to ask my parents for a new pair of running/gym shoes. A close friend of mine had recently got a new pair of Nikes which I liked the look of and which made me slightly envious, I had a similar pair but they were starting to get old and were well worn. I decided to ask my parents for a new pair but at first as expected they tried to argue that my current pair of shoes were perfectly fine; however, after explaining how the soles of my current Nikes were starting to wear thin and how a new pair would help to support my feet during activities as well as prevent injury they reluctantly accepted to purchase a new pair for me.…

The Science of Persuasion article gave excellent insight into the various tactics that are used in advertisements, marketing communications, and even in everyday life by our peers who are ultimately trying to make an exchange for something they want or need. The Cialdini article discussed the six persuasive strategies of reciprocation, consistency, social validation, liking, authority, and scarcity. I think we have experienced each of these strategies in different strategies at various points in one’s life. Personally, the reciprocation strategy is the most basic and subconscious as most people feel obligated to return a good deed done unto them. This persuasive tactic is enhanced even more when you add the element of liking.…

All of the interventions is related to obesity of how they can do things to avoid obesity. I choose these interventions because it is key for children to learn about these insights and also for the community to be notified about the seriousness in obesity within elementary students. These are children who likes to have fun and interact. An intervention that is just lecturing children has little effect on them of learning about obesity.…

Eating disorders cause a detrimental impact on those effected, however, they have become a wide spread phenomenon in modern society, especially among females because of an exaggerated focus on body image. Media has shaped a society in which an eating disorder can easily be developed due to the obsession with being skinny and how access to this information has become so easily distributed. The consumption of media has become highly prevalent in society due to the continuing developments of modern technology. In turn, media has become more accessible than ever, causing certain negative factors to arise, such as an unhealthy mentality concerning body image. Main stream, American media, in particular, is riddled with the over repetition and commonplace image of a thin woman which causes the circulation of the belief that a woman must be skinny to be considered attractive.…

The second form of communication that affects the process of persuasion is political correctness which is the avoidance of forms of expression or actions that insult groups of people that are socially disadvantaged or discriminated against.…
