El Sistema Research Paper

All around the world, there are places plagued with poverty. Often poverty will affect the life choices and style of living for the newer generations. Much too often youth will fall into pits of alcohol and drug abuse, and gang activity. Many will even drop out of school. How do we stop this chain reaction caused by poverty and misuse of time? Since 1975, José Abreu and others have ran an organization called El Sistema (formerly known as National Network of Youth and Children's Orchestras of Venezuela) that has been combating this problem in Venezuela. They have been using the power of music. The program El Sistema gives the opportunity for youth to play musical instruments in a rigorous and awarding setting, which leads them to have more productive and fulfilling lives. El Sistema has been led by great people to bring music to the less privileged in Venezuela and all around the world, who benefit from it by gaining purpose and excitement in their lives. Many El Sistema programs around the world have been created to deliver social change to impoverished areas. When students are busy with learning music most of the day, the chance of them getting into drugs and crime decreases exceedingly. It gives them something constructive to do with their lives. Educating youth in music also gives them the chance to use their talents in future careers. It may be just the push they need to get up higher in life. Even if the students don’t plan to use music as a career, they gain important principles like practicing, goal setting, time management, and dedication. This is important in almost any career. When students choose to follow a career path in music, they bring years of music experience to the music world. These students also have a unique perspective that only they can bring into
