In the story The House of The Scorpion, by Nancy Farmer, the main character is Matt and this mostly takes place in Opium. In the beginning it takes place in a lab that creates clones. The embryo of Matteo Alacran is put into a cow, the cow gives birth to it like a normal baby. But with all clones they are given something that stops them from having any intelligence but this one does not. The main conflict of the story is Matt’s existence, for he is a clone. At the end of the story the solution is that Matt is then made the new El Patron after the original El Patron dies.
Something to think about at first, is of Matt and this entire new world he is introduced to. It’s different because he only knew of Celia and he was prohibited of going outside and was told stories to make him scared of going outside. When learning of what he is make him wonder what his purpose in life is and why is he important to El Patron (the original version of him). El Patron is the most powerful person in Opium by seeing how no one goes against him, and all that Matt sees was created by him, he made his empire from the ground up. But being the only clone that has intelligence makes him unliked and just being a clone does too. People were told clones are like animals and are stupid creatures.

According to the passage, “He would dig up the poppy fields and put in normal crops. Once the eejits were cured, Matt would give them the choice of returning home or of working for him. He would help them find their children” (Farmers 379). As you can see Matt is planning to fix the empire and make it out of peace and not by fear and terror. The ideas of trying to fix the eejits back to normal was a more surprising but yet good idea of Matt’s. If El Patron was still there he would deny the idea

Including what most of the other friend commented, I believe El Pachuco to be many things, most significantly as Henry’s conscience and his alter ego, but also as an omniscient narrator because El Pachuco knows everything that is going on and almost as if he controls the play and which direction the action goes and an iconic symbol to the audience he is the embodiment of the zoot suit the secret fantasy of every Chicano male youth. Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs is an interesting novel where Johann Hari, the author tells his story of being drawn to addicts and recovering addicts. His feeling of being drawn to these addicts made it possible for him to travel all over the world. I am going to break this novel into three different themes that I saw Hari make. The first theme that I thought was interesting and not surprising is that race plays a huge part in who is to be arrested and or convicted of a crimes because of their race. Secondly, I wanted to focus on one of the program that John Marks set up for heroin addicts where he discovers a breakthrough.…

One quote from the beginning of the story is, “He decided he would fix his teeth by pushing on them. After breakfast that Saturday, he went to his room, closed the door quietly, turned the radio on, and pushed for three hours straight.” This is important because it shows how Alfonso is not confident in himself and how he is very self-conscious in what he does.…
