In The House of the Scorpion, the main antagonist is El Patron. He owns a piece of land between the United States and what used to be called Mexico. El Patron created Matt for the purpose of using him later in life when El Patron was going to die. However, he allowed Matt to live a life as close to him as possible to brainwash Matt into thinking that his motives were good. He prevented Matt from being pricked into being an eejit, which is an almost like robot being. El Patron grew up in a poor household with seven brothers and sisters that all died young. El Patron’s fighting spirit and will to live was the only thing that allowed him to survive. He soon started a drug business, selling illegal drugs to the US as well as Mexico. Their final agreement was to have both countries “set aside land along their common borders” and then, “the dealers would promise not to sell drugs to the citizens to the United States and Mexico”. When Matt first read this, he was in shock that someone could be so rude to El Patron, who was successful. The idea that eejits were not normal or humane, and drugs were illegal was all new to him. Since he was raised in a place where eejits died often, and power was not equally shared between people, he did not think that anything was wrong, or needed to be changed. This is because El Patron has poisoned his mind into thinking whatever El Patron wanted Matt to think. By the time Matt realized that he was in danger and El Patron’s true motives, it was too late. Even though he should’ve hated El Patron, he still had an emotional bond with him that caused him to almost get killed and used to help El Patron live even longer. Once Matt realized how evil El Patron was, he began to realize that many people have given him small hints to escape. But being so close to El Patron and believing that El Patron thought he was truly different and important, Matt didn’t realize those
