Matt’s early years were very peaceful. In a small house on the edge of a poppy farm, Matt lives with his caretaker, Celia, who works as a head chef at El Patron’s mansion. When he was discovered by three children wondering in the fields, Matt smashes the windows and escapes from his house for the first time. Unaware of the dangers of the broken glass, Matt had to be carried to El Patron’s house where he would be treated for his injuries. Matt was treated caringly until El Patron’s great-grandson, Mr. Alacron, recognizes that Matt was a clone, resulting in Rosa being put in charge of him. Matt was later imprisoned in a room full of sawdust where Rosa and other people treated him horribly, as if he was an animal. When El Patron discovers how Matt was being treated, he was enraged. El Patron punishes Rosa, turning her into an eejit, and forbids anyone from treating Matt poorly ever again. Matt is also given a bodyguard named Tam Lin, who becomes a father-like figure to Matt.

Matt and Maria tries fleeing the scene by using secret passageways but the newlyweds stopped them. Matt was then sent to the hospital where El Patron confirms that the main reason why Matt was born was because he was to keep El Patron alive with his healthy organs, in this case, for Matt’s healthy heart. But not particularly, at this moment Celia reveals that she has been poisoning Matt all along, making his organs not safe for an old man like El Patron to carry in his body. Soon after, El Patron dies. Mr. Alacran then sends Tam Lin to dispose Matt, instead Tam Lin gives Matt supplies that would help him travel to Aztlan where he would finally meet Maria
