El Nino Effect

Conclusively, our research cruise information turns out to fall in general terms. However, there is factors that effect the results. One factor that influences the data results is El Nino. What is El Nino? El Nino is "A southward-flowing, nutrient-poor current of flowing, nutrient-poor current of warm water off the coast of western South America, caused by a breakdown of trade-wind circulation."(Oceanography: An Invitation). Specifically, El Nino influences seawater temperature, density, and oxygen in the water. First all, El Nino influences seawater temperature by causing seawater temperature to increase. For example, in fall of 2014 at a depth of 3 meters water temperature is 19.49 Celsius; however, in fall of 2015 the seawater increases to 21.27 …show more content…
Additionally, seawater temperature influences the density of the water. In general, the colder the seawater the greater the density and the warmer the seawater the less dense the seawater. Specifically, in the fall of 2014 the seawater density at a depth of 15 meters is 1024.98 g/cm3; however, in comparison to fall of 2015 the seawater temperature in Long Beach is 1023.4 g/cm3. El Nino also effects the oxygen in the seawater. Why? This due to the fact that warmer seawater is able to hold less oxygen in comparison to colder seawater which is able to hold more oxygen in the water. Specifically, this water holds less oxygen due to the fact that, as mostreamteam.org a website that is worrisome about streams, "Warm water allows for larger spaces between water molecules where oxygen can readily escape. Whereas, cold water is more closely packed together with smaller spaces between molecules holding oxygen tighter."(moststreamteam.org). Unfortunately, this may be bad for the wild life that habits this area. In addition, some marine animals that are not native to this area may have to migrate elsewhere. Thus effecting the number of species in Long Beach

Heart Reef The Heart Reef, in the Great Barrier Reef, is a beautiful organisation of coral and rocks naturally formed into the shape of a heart. The reef was created by hundreds of years of dead coral building up in a massive, underwater stone wall, which has then grown algae and new coral, which reproduces, dies and grows year by year. The Heart Reef is a beautiful array of stunning coral formations, naturally shaped into a heart.…

“EL NINO” is a climate pattern where the water near the pacific ocean gets hotter and affects the atmosphere and it occurs once every few years. Instead of the waves coming in the Pacific North, they come as the south waves and it hits California, carrying moisture and storms. The California El Niño effect has increased rainfall with floods, landslides, and coastal erosion. This is affecting the climate and hence GLOBAL WARMING increases .…

Is climate change real? If the corals in coral reefs were asked, I believe they would say yes. I happen to agree with them. Coral reefs are dying off or becoming unhealthy due to too warm temperatures and ocean acidification. Population declines, warmer temperatures, and ocean acidification are caused by climate change, which in turn is thought to be caused by humans.…

Over the course of the last couple of years, weather patterns have exceedingly changed due to climate change. Overall, climate change is seen as a very controversial issue because some people believe that climate change is a legitimate issue and has been directly caused by humans, while others believe that the weather changes are just natural processes that should be expected to change from time to time and that climate change has absolutely nothing to do with the recent temperature changes that the world has been going through. However, climate change has been proven to be the leading cause of changing weather patterns all over the world, as well as the start of the El Niño effect, which is a series of climatic changes in the Pacific Ocean…

The earth 's climate is dynamic and always changing through a natural cycle. Although both natural causes and human activities causes the climate what the world is more worried about is that the changes that are occurring today have been speeded up because of man 's activities. A growing population has brought nationwide recognition to Los Angeles and the surrounding area, but it has also brought increasing environmental problems, including water shortages and pollution and air pollution. Also, the city is susceptible to variable precipitation because of its geographic location, which means there are unpredictable droughts, and the dense population contributes to storm water pollution of local bodies of water.…

Climate change is a complex global issue that encompasses a multitude of physical systems ranging from the atmosphere to the carbon cycle to the cryosphere and the ocean. This brief provides an introductory overview of the current state of climate science, using data on historical and future trends from recent scientific literature. It explores the methodologies of scientific research on climate change; the role of the atmosphere and greenhouse gases (specifically carbon dioxide) in climate change; the effects of climate change on the ocean (temperatures, sea levels, cryosphere, ocean acidification); and the consequences of climate change on extreme weather. Before delving into the climate science, two terms are unnecessary to grasp patterns in climate change: climate forcing and climate feedback. Climate forcing occurs when a factor external to the climate system changes the actual climate system.…

Climate change may be partly to blame for the decreasing number of Atlantic salmon. Some direct biological impacts of the change in climate include physiological stress, increased depletion of energy reserves, increased susceptibility and exposure to disease and disruptions to breeding efforts there is evidence that the temperature of the sea's surface may affect the young salmons survival. It is also thought that climate change may affect salmon growth rates or make their food less available. It has been noted that areas of particularly warm freshwater can present a thermal barrier to migrating salmon that requires additional energy to navigate around. Such barriers can also delay or even prevent spawning from occurring.…

The Liberal Hoax Climate Change: A long-term change in the Earth’s climate, especially a change due to an increase in the average atmospheric temperature. It is largely due to the increasing amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere. Ever since the industrial revolution, it has been a rapidly growing issue. More recently, however, certain groups of people have begun to deny this scientifically proven phenomenon. In fact, in 2015, Donald Trump, who now is the President of the United States of America has stated, “I’m not a believer in man-made global warming.”…

Many people do not understand how an imbalance in the ocean can affect the world around them. In the article “Red Tides and Dead Zones,” Andrew Solow talks about how important it is to conserve and protect the ocean ecosystem. People cannot fathom that the most widespread environmental problem in the ocean is caused by an excess of chemical nutrients. This is due to a wide range of human activities such as: waste disposal, costal development, fossil fuel use, and the intensification of agriculture (Solow). Once these nutrients are in the ocean, they stimulate the growth of phytoplankton.…

Global warming caused by human emissions has intensified the drought in California by 15 to 20 percent. The biggest impact of warmer temperatures has been that they intensify the effects of drought, increasing evaporation and drying out the soil. This combination of exceptional dryness and warmth have acted together to produce the most severe drought conditions experienced in California. The drought is believed to be caused by a mass of warm water in the Pacific Ocean that has drifted closer to the West Coast .Another factor which influences the california drought is precipitation. California relies upon the buildup of a snowpack in the winter to melt into runoff in the spring for the state's water supply.…

Human activity has a great impact on global warming. Events, such as burning fossil fuels, contributes much of the carbon dioxide that is emitted into the atmosphere. Global warming effects caused by human activity affects the earth 's climate in many ways. It is melting the earth 's poles, glaciers and ice sheets which causes sea levels to rise. It is also shifting climates and precipitation patterns and is forcing animals to migrate.…
