The song Steph picked reminds me a bit of the song I picked. The song I picked is called El Majo Discreto by Enrique Granados. It is a Spanish aria that I will be learning to sing this semester. It’s this fun, piece of music that makes you want to smile. When listening to this song you can feel the emotions the singer is portraying. The song is about women in love and her describing how he makes her feel. When listening to music you know that there is always a story behind it. Stated on pg 65 in Hodges and Sebald text, “Telling stories through music is a powerful means of communicating messages beyond the story itself”. Similarities to this song to the music I listen to today would have to be the meanings behind the music. I love listing

El Corrido and Klail City are both presented as narrative forms that attempt to establish a central experience surrounding the Chicano community. In El Corrido, a play written by Luis Valdez in 1976 and performed in El Teatro Campesino, the use of the musical traditional form, the corrido, tells the story of Jesus Pelado Rasquachi’s journey to America and Beto, a next generation Chicano, experience connecting to Jesus’ story. The corrido is presented to Beto who is perceived as out of touch with his community and culture as a way for him to connect. Additionally, in Khail City author Rolando Hinojosa writes a novel about several generations within a border town in Texas and presents characters and their histories as a way to demonstrate…

and George Weiss symbolically connected the colors of nature to the colors of mankind. This powerful theme of the song worked to send a message of acceptance for all races despite their skin colors, and I personally take that message to the heart. There’s an optimistic tone to the song with lines like “I see babies crying, I watch them grow”, this gives off a sense of serenity and hopeful view of the future. This is also why I chose this particular piece, the songwriters’ and I share the same sentiment of opposing pessimism and proclaiming a brighter tomorrow.…

The intended audience is for men who were not supporters for the suffrage movement. The first two verses talk about different men, both whom disagree that women should be allowed to vote. However, the last verse is "an earnest, thoughtful man" who agrees that women should be allowed to vote by saying, "her rights are the same as mine, let the woman choose her sphere". The symbolism of using the tune of "Auld Lang Syne" represents that the past social belief that women had to stay in the home and now it is the beginning of allowing women to have more rights and "choose their own sphere". This emphasizes the role of the male perspective of allowing women to vote and does not include the opinions of women.…

The song portrays a range of social problems the people have to grapple with as day go by. The song speaks to the inner city streets of the American society regarding the social injustices leveled against the minority communities especially the African Americans. The white man controls most of the majority hence perpetuating racial segregation right from the media, the prisons to the social environments. This has made people to choose a life of drug dealing and easy money as well as abusing the welfare system because they have no other alternative in a society that does not provide them with a motivation to change.…

Have you ever heard a song that has impacted your life? Songs are a form of art that allows artists to express their feelings in a form of music. Songs can be interrupted in many ways; some songs have a more literal meaning, while other songs require you to interpret the lyrics to understand the deeper meaning. Artists often use figurative, metaphorical, and poetic elements in their songs to help develop the overall message. The use of figurative terms in a song leaves the interpretation of the song broad and allows the listener to have their own meaning of the song.…

The one quote that summarizes this whole book completely, comes pretty late during the analysis. “Music may be the activity that prepared our pre-human ancestors for speech communication and for the very cognitive, representational flexibility necessary to become humans.” (Daniel J. Levitin, 260.) This quote pretty much expresses the full meaning of this book, which is to explain the innate importance and development of music. This quote is received when the argument about how music has evolved humans, is brought up.…
