The “invisible bug” infestations are clinically known as the Ekbom Syndrome. Ekbom’s Syndrome is a mental disorder that a person believes that there is bugs in their skin, clothes and surroundings, which is why they call it the “invisible bug.” People with Ekbom Syndrome often develop purplish-blue, rounded and raw cuts from scratching because of the thought of bugs in their body. There is no actual founder of this disease, but it was named after Karl A. Ekbom, the Swedish neurologist who provided a definitive description of the condition in 1938. Some doctors describe this as a “rare” disorder. Some entomologists stated that approximately 100,000 people are struggling with this mental disorder. A sign of Ekbom’s Syndrome are the feeling of bugs in your skin and everywhere around you. One symptom of Ekbom’s Syndrome is constant itching, because of the feeling of bugs in your skin. Another symptom is moving from one house to another because of the thought of bugs infesting your home. Another is the need to buy new clothes and throw away the others. It is because of the feeling that the bugs are growing in your clothes and ruining them. Serotonergic antidepressants often have a role in the treatment of these patients.
