Communication Analysis Sean Combs’ (Diddy), commencement speech for Howard University’s class of 2014 was able to captivate the audience, which were the graduating seniors of 2014, with his illustrious anecdotes and powerful message about greatness. As a former Howard student Diddy was able to resonate with the graduating class, and the struggles in which they had to go through in order to reach that moment. He has a versatile relationship with the crowd because even though he is a multi-millionaire entrepreneur, he too walked across the yard of Howard’s campus over the course of two years. His references to getting checked into the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle and the lack of food, made many draw similarities to their own Howard experiences. Due to this aspect his words meant…

How many public speeches have you heard? Since I was a kid, I have been a fan of great public figures making historical speeches, especially during a time of crisis. Notably, one of my favorite public speeches was given on April 3, 1968, by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., entitled, “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top”, which was the very last speech he gave and is considered an iconic moment in American history. Keep in mind, Dr. King was assassinated the following day. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech, motivated individuals and intensified their passion and hope for equality, in a room full of disadvantage African-Americans.…

Since the moment James Spaniolo walked into the room I noticed that he was going to make it a very casual presentation by the way be took off his coat and made himself comfortable. He was an excellent speaker who spoke with a lot of confidence and clarity. I noticed that before beginning his presentation, he stood in the power pose, which is something Ms. Nielson always encouraged us to do before speaking in front of an audience. Throughout his speech, I got the impression that he is a very humble, hard-working, and wise individual. It was clear to me that he is very passionate about what he has done and is currently doing career-wise.…

English composition was never my strong nor favorite because of my knowledge of the grammar and organization in my writing. Taking English 101 is a jump start for me, because last year of high school my teacher focused primarily on English literature. The course has introduced me to rhetorical analysis, and swatching (imitating author argument). Throughout the semester and all of the papers written I can say that it was a good experience to write at a college level and the expectation from college professors is good for future courses that involve writing essays.…

In the commencement speech, Jobs used a narrative pattern with an introduction, three stories, and an end. In a short, succinct opening, Jobs set the stage for his talk, grabbed the audience’s attention and used self-deprecating humor by telling them he had never been to a graduation ceremony before. By starting with humor, he gave the audience a break from the more serious topic about life and their future and kept the audience enthusiastic for what he said next. The text of his speech told a natural and highly effective story and revealed insights about Jobs’ life that the students could relate to.…

After reflecting back on your presentation there were a few things that stuck in my mind. The first one was when you asked our class to say why we were here, there was another question (not on the recording), and wrote them on the chalk board. The reason I think it stuck in my mind was because of how you were able to relate your presentation back to those words and why they were important. Despite our answers they were able to relate to your story in one way or another. One of the words was related back to the idea of being conditioned for fear.…
