Ehrenreich's Ideas

Improved Essays
Identify two central ideas Ehrenreich writes about; analyze how she develops these ideas as she writes chapter 1 (include how the ideas interact and build on each other). One of her main ideas that she shares are how she paced herself. She described how she plans out her budget (page 27), balancing the rent, groceries, and emergency money. Ehrenreich also shares her struggles with getting a second job to keep up with the rent (pg 28). She starts out saying that she can work with the two jobs (pg 45), but after a few days, the housekeeping job didn’t work out (pg 48), and then she walked out of the diner that she was working at, “an overwhelming dank sense of failure pressing down on me...” (pg 48) was the only feeling she got. Another main idea was how working required incredible feats of stamina, focus, memory, quick thinking, and fast learning (pgs 16-21). The …show more content…
Ehrenreich describes herself as having to present a drastically stripped-down version of herself to her employers (pg 5). Her background consisted of her being divorced homemaker with three years of college education, a few housecleaning jobs and after-dinner cleanups. Her interaction with coworkers however didn’t change. (Pg 7) She stated she wore usual clothes, hairstyles, and makeup. She spoke about her children and marriage, etc. Although she did modify her vocabulary , censoring profanities, otherwise her speech didn’t change.
At this point in your reading, what is Ehrenreich’s claim or argument? Her argument seems to be that living on minimum wage isn’t a very enjoyable life. The constant ache and stress is enough to drive anyone crazy, having to pay for the rent and groceries is hard even working fulltime.
Ehrenreich conducts her experiment in the late 1990s. List 3 differences between that minimum wage worker’s world and that of today’s minimum wage worker. 1. Federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, back then it was $5.15 an

Generally-speaking, Ehrenreich employs a large array of metaphors, in order to better foster a conspicuous relationship between the kitchen’s features and bodily organs. In further elaboration upon this reality, the author sheds light upon the dire conditions of the restaurant’s workers by elucidating upon the crude features of the human body; for instance, the extensive elaboration made upon the small intestine, which is, in turn, home to arguably the most obnoxious digestive processes, is explicitly linked to the garbage and disposal area: a manifestation of the hardships that Barbara endures on a rather frequent basis. Evidence from the text that further bolsters this claim is shown when Ehrenreich states, “Put your hand down on any counter…

Third aspect of a quest is that there needs to be a stated reason to go somewhere. In the introduction Ehrenreich informs the reader of how she came up with this idea. The reason she decides to go on this quest was from a conversation she had with a friend. Ehrenreich was having lunch with her friend Lewis Lapham, and decided to bring up her favorite topic poverty. She tells him that somebody needs to experience what poverty is like and then write about their experiences.…

After reading the essay “Should Fast-Food Workers Be Paid $15 per Hour” written by a student who goes by the name of Trudie Makens, it was clear that her piece fell under the genre of “articles in public affairs” (27) even as an exploratory essay for a class discussion. The topic of whether minimum wage should be raised or kept the same is discussed through various viewpoints from minimum wage employees to a business perspective. The essay’s purpose is to allow the reader to be exposed to the two sides of the argument and allow the reader to formulate their own opinions on the topic of potentially raising the minimum wage of low income jobs. Makens’ essay was incredibly effective in allowing the reader to ultimately come up with their own…

Many citizens in the United States struggle, barely making it with minimum wage paying jobs. Most people work two to three jobs put together, to pay for their livings and to support for their families. Based on the State of California: Department of Industrial Relations, in October 1, 1996, minimum wage was $4.25-increasing to $4.75 within that year. A year after, in March 1st, the wage was $5.15-$5.75, but it changed again on September 1st. Increasing a dollar twenty-five.…

Ehrenreich utilizes exemplum to emphasize the harrowing living and working conditions of workers in the service industry by providing examples of the lives of her fellow employees. In using enumeratio and metaphor, Ehrenreich is conveying the gruesome details of the workplace environment for most service workers. With her use of procatalepsis, Ehrenreich refutes the idea that the poor have come up with some “secret way” to live simply without sacrificing anything major.…

Lastly, the argument that baffles me is when I hear people say why should these burger-flippers, high school dropouts, and uneducated people make the same as an EMT, people in a trade and people with college degrees. This argument is invalid because many people making minimum wage don't want to make the same as an EMT of fresh college graduate. All they want to is be paid a fair livable wage, so they won't have to struggle and suffer as much just to pay their bills and buy groceries for their…

Ehrenreich describes how she felt invisible, almost completely unnoticed by the women she cleaned houses for, “Mostly, though, she will not see you at all and may even sit down with her mail at a table in the very room you are cleaning, where she would remain completely unaware of your existence unless you were to crawl under that table to and start gnawing away at her ankles” (481, Ehrenreich). Ehrenreich was made to feel inferior when she was working at Merry Maids, in a similar way to how bell hooks felt at school. If you treat someone like they are inferior, eventually they may begin to believe it…

The issue of minimum wage has been a hotly debated topic among politicians and their constituents. Many argue whether minimum wage exists to help people on poverty or used as a base salary for future positions. This issue has been especially concerning for candidates running for the 2016 presidential election. Despite being a somewhat simple topic, the argument for minimum wage has divided Americans in terms of what to do. In Ari Armstrong’s article, he argues that minimum wage is egregious and will only harm the economy by causing people to have lower motivations and lack of employment.…

Should the minimum wage be raised to fifteen dollars an hour? There is a good amount of people that think that this is a good idea when it is actually a bad idea. First, the raise of the minimum wage to fifteen dollars would be a higher wage than some people make with an education. If minimum wage raises, then all wages would increase accordingly. Also, the price of merchandise would be raised on everything to make up for the raise in minimum wage.…

In a political cartoon drawn by Nick Anderson for The Houston Chronicle, a man is depicted standing on top of a huge mountain of money. There is a smaller person standing on the ground with a sign that reads, “Raise minimum wage.” The man standing on the pile of money is saying to the other person “Your greed is hurting the economy.” The cartoonist is trying to make a point about those standing in opposition to a higher minimum wage. Anderson is saying that those who are against raising the minimum wage are extremely greedy, and that they are hypocrites for calling proponents of a higher minimum wage greedy.…
