Abstract
A review of an article published studying the benefits and challenges posed by the use of electronic devices by student nurses was completed through the Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea (Choi, Mona, et al., 2018). The article was deemed to be level II due to its quasi-experimental nature and of good quality due to its self-reported limited duration in time. It is believed the information contained within the article meets the criteria for all five areas of the evidence table, providing succinct and well-defined structure throughout. While student nurses learn the groundwork of nursing from physical assessment to interdisciplinary care plan development, not all have been granted the opportunity to develop his or her EHR skills during nursing training. The authors of this article performed a study that identified strengths and weakness of the incorporation of AEMR (Academic Electronic Medical Records) during nursing …show more content…
The authors of the study accurately concluded that the use of EHR is of great benefit to the student nurse and nursing in general. While there are drawbacks to the use of EHR (connectivity and access challenges) specifically with regards to the nursing student, there are great advantages being the access to vital information, in real-time, when and where it is needed. The authors stated that it may have been possible that the short period of time between the pre- and post-test of the experimental group may have skewed some of the results. They may not have considered that, by third year nursing students, some important critical thinking skills may have already been in place.
In general, the methods used were adequate to present a good case for the use of AEMR by student nurses. With the guidance of the professors and instructors, the AEMR is invaluable in the practicum setting. In this particular study however, it must also be considered that it appears to be a study within a study. The conclusions are well-presented, however there is much defense of the actual AEMR program itself. The next logical step in this would be a possible full RCT with this particular AEMR and another design.
