At seventeen years old I had my first introduction to the United States Healthcare system. In November of 2004 I had three weeks left on my mother’s health insurance, I was approaching my last semester of high school and was having frequent unexplained fainting spells. With a month left on my insurance I quickly went through rigorous testing to determine the cause, leaving me feeling like a test subject in a lab. In the beginning of 2005 I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Specifically, I had complex partial seizures, I was handed five different prescriptions and sent on my way.…
I continued living with these issues for the next 22 years. I went from doctor to doctor ,appointment to appointment. Did test after test. I was removed from PE every year because I was having a hard time keeping up with the physical demand because my body couldn't handle it. Doctor visits became just a normal routine to me and my symptoms(heart palpitations and shortness of breath) were always just something I thought I was going to have to live with forever.…
Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. With the common decision to get a job at the age of sixteen, I worked the summer after sophomore year. With this, my Summer break suddenly took a turn into the busy lane. Between my sophomore and junior year in highschool I received two concussions while cheering on my school's varsity squad. Three months after my last concussion I was experiencing excruciating headaches, light sensitivity, memory issues, persistent fatigue, and struggles with my school work. Everyday tasks like walking up the stairs, waking up on time, and remembering the route to school became substantial hurdles. Anxious, my mother decided to take me to see a neurologist. I went through multiple MRI’s, CT scans, and X-Rays to determine the condition of my neck and brain tissues, all of which returned normal.…
At nine, I developed Type I Diabetes which cut my lifespan by 13 years. While it is treatable, there is no cure. She forced me to confront my disease and my life head on.…
There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…
Doctors said my diseases would never go away, so we turned to natural approaches. Through holistic and integrative doctors, I changed my diet and lifestyle drastically. Today I am all about eating healthy, working out, and yoga. I would never change my past, because it has shaped me into the wonderful person I am today.…
In my last years of high school I thought I wanted to be a teacher specialising in additional support needs. Because of this, I decided to go to university to get a degree in psychology. While I was studying psychology, I discovered Educational Psychology, which would need the equivalent of two years full time experience working with children. This fit into and expanded my [focussed] path of teaching and moving into additional support needs. So I continued forward, applying to do a post-graduate in primary education after I graduated.…

6. If my friend was experiencing a great deal of stress issues, I would suggest a few things to her. First, I would encourage her to reduce the amount of caffeine, sweets, and fried foods she is consuming. These foods and drinks can trigger and aggravate stress, causing her to be more anxious and compounding the problems. Second, I would suggest for her to drink more water, eat a “rainbow of foods,” and attempt to consume some food every four hours.…
