Egyptian Structures: Is there more than meets the Eye? Have you ever wondered what something unique signified? Learning the representation of things can be interesting. “For many decades, Egyptians didn’t have any real proof of eclipses” (Ibrahem). More than just impressive Egyptian structures and character, the Sphinx, the Great Pyramid, and the Eye of Horus are symbols related to the solar eclipse. First off, the Egyptian Sphinx is a monument that has the body of a lion and the head of a man. Now I bet you did not know that one of the many representations of the Sphinx is the Egyptian Lord of solar eclipses! “The Sphinx was a beast of the sun God, highlighting the position of the king’s role as the son of Ra” (Lloyd). Additional meaning is the Hawk of the Horizon. The Egyptians associated lions with eclipses because they were believed to be guardians of the horizons. Secondly, the Great Pyramid is the eclipse of Khufu. Horus was an ancient God said to be the sun and moon, later to be described as a powerful destructive force that is associated with the fierce heat of the sun and was labelled as the daughter of Ra. Which happens to be personified by the eye of Horus. The eye of Horus literally means all seeing eye. Described to have protective and healing abilities, the eye of Horus must have worked some amazing miracles to have such meaning to its name. The eye is a powerful symbol of protection (Hill). Hathor, Bast, Mut, and the Goddess of Wadjet correspondingly represent the eye. “Later traditions state that the left eye represents the moon and is called the eye of Horus and the right eye represents the sun and is now called the Eye of Ra”
