The ancient Egyptians built pyramids for their pharaohs and queens. The pharaohs were buried in pyramids of different shapes and sizes from the beginning Old Kingdom to the end of the Middle Kingdom. As of 2008, there were between 118 pyramids that had been identified. The largest and best preserved pyramids were built in Giza at the beginning of the Old Kingdom. The most well-known of these pyramids was built for the pharaoh Khufu. It is known as the ‘Great Pyramid’ and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence. The earliest known pyramids are found at Saqqara. The earliest among those is the Pyramid of Djoser. It was built during the third dynasty. The estimated number of workers per pyramid range from a few thousand to one hundred thousand.

In 1842, Karl Richard Lepsius composed the first modern list of pyramids. He counted 67, however, there have been many more that have been discovered. As of November 2008, 118 pyramids were discovered.
Most pyramids are in poor state of preservation or buried by desert sands. If they are even visible, they look like mounds of rubble. Archeologists have the opportunity the identify and study previously unknown pyramids. The most recent one discovered belonged to Queen Sesheshet, mother of 6th dynasty Pharaoh Teti, found in Saqqara. The discovery was presented by the Secretary General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, on November 11, 2008. Abu Rawash is the site of Egypt’s northerly pyramid. The most destroyed pyramid in Pyramid of Djedefre, son and successor of Khufu.It was said thet the pyramid was never completed, but archealogist proved it was completed.
