The Stela of Iykhernofret is an artefact that dates back to the Middle Kingdom. It contains an autobiography of an official named Iykhernofret, who lived during the reigns of Senwosret III and Amenemhet III in the end of the Twelfth Dynasty. The stela was found in Abydos, a city located on the western bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt’s eighth nome, relatively close to the Qena Bend. It is home to a necropolis – a vast burial site – in which the pharaohs from the Early Dynastic Period were buried. Over time, the ancient funerary connections of Abydos developed into a religious cultic center for the mummified funerary god of the Underworld, Osiris.…

Nephthys comes into prominence with her role played in the Osiris-myth, who is represented as the goddess accompanying her sister Isis in the search and the protection of Osiris’ body. The only epigraphic attestation of Nephthys in the Greek world is known in a liturgical calendar from Athens, dating to the reign of Hadrian, which lists sacrifices comprising a rooster, grains of wheat and barley, and a libation of melikraton offered to Osiris and Nephthys on 13 Boedromion. Referring to the mythical role of Osiris by using the title βασιλεύς and Nephthys confirm that the nature of the dedication is directly related to the Osiris-myth. By dedicating the statuettes of the two deities to Osiris, the dedicant was intended to bring Isis and…

A well-known Egyptian myth told the conflict between Osiris and his evil brother Seth, who killed him, cut his body into 14 pieces, and threw away the parts into the Nile. Isis, Osiris’ wife, then brought Osiris back to life. Osiris became the symbol of resurrection to the Egyptians, which played a significant role in influencing the use of tombs for the dead in ancient Egypt. The flooding of the Nile and the life it brought was associated with Isis’ act of collecting parts of Osiris each spring in the festival of the new land.…
