Art has always been an intricate aspect of the modern world we live in today. Art, according to Merriam-Webster is defined as "paintings, sculptures and drawings created to be beautiful or to represent expressed feelings or ideas". History is revealed everyday throughout the world of art and meanings behind them.
Ancient Egyptian history has always been a fascination for many people. Egypt holds a great amount of importance within Art history. To most, when you hear of Ancient Egypt, you think about two things: Mummies and Pyramids. Considering this, there is a lot more to Egypt that h been publicized. With his wife, Queen Nefertiti and their children, Egypt started to see a vast change once the Pharaoh changed the capital to El-Amarna .The king and his queen started building temples and gradually yet secretly, the people of Egypt started to despise them. Most artwork during this time were solely based on the royal family. In many of the reliefs that I have observed whether the Pharaoh was with his wife or his daughters, most of these reliefs shows damage to the Pharaohs face or Queen Nefertiti’s face. Making the country monotheistic and utilizing all the riches to keep within the family and build more temples, rather than spread it to the army and the country gathered a lot of hatred from the Egyptian people. This new found religion and new form of art became monumental in Egyptian history.
The purpose of this artwork was to show just how much the Pharaoh adorned the Sun-God Aten. Most reliefs or artwork of Pharaoh Akhenaten and of his family shows them offering gifts to the sun, as a token of gratitude. Reliefs such as these were made because the pharaoh wanted to be publicized. He wanted those who were polytheistic, to merge into his new found cult/ religion.
