In a time period where we didn’t have countries we had empires, there was luxury, order, a personal identity for each specific location. You would imagine everyone was too busy trying to maintain the massive amount of land and population under their control. For some reason they weren’t, what was most important to these empires was their pride and size, they strive on growing. What else would explain how the Persian Empire stretched from India to Egypt but they were still in constant conflict with the Greek Empire. Or how the Roman Empire

He emphasizes their animalistic aspects, like the fact that they aren't one unified civilization they are a bunch of small tribes doing their own thing. He also emphasizes how warlike and ready to fight they are. Although they didn’t have any real problems until about 400 C.E. and Tacitus was only alive from 56-117 C.E.(Strayer, 130 & 140)The brief encounters they had had with the Germanic peoples was enough for them to notice something about them. Tacitus describes them as pure bred, they’re distinctive.”all have fierce blue eyes, red hair, huge frames, fit only for a sudden exertion.”(Strayer, 140) The attention to their build and energy makes it seem as though they fear them, they automatically saw them as intruders and if they weren’t they had the potential to be. They weren’t very far and they had strength two things that are seen a threat always. If you see someone as the threat you don’t think highly of them, you choose to only see the “barbaric” side of a …show more content…
They were original facts, but at some points those have been tweaked into many different people's perspectives. Think about how in modern news the same thing could be covered by two different medias and be portrayed as two different things. Just look at Fox news and CNN. Herodotus and Tacitus are FOX and CNN. What they documented is what was beneficial to their views not the “opponents”. Herodotus wouldn’t make the Persians out to be drunken perverts if he didn’t want people to think poorly of them. Tacitus wouldn’t emphasize that the Germanic people were big and intimidating unless he wanted people to fear them, which would result in people revolting against them. They praised the empires that benefitted them, they provided the goods and technologies that they find beneficial to their society. That’s why Herodotus made sure he said good things about the people of Egypt and their culture. This is important to know because if we based our knowledge of a culture off of Gossip what are we really basing it

They were among the most influential ancient civilizations, which gave birth to our modern society’s culture. Though they each were unique and had different aspects, culturally and religiously, they all originated similarly, and shared similar views, at the roots of each civilization. They laid down the foundations for what our world’s culture and religion is today. Although it has been millennia since these early civilizations were first around, and their customs and religions are ancient, they have managed to influence, as well as give birth to, different cultures and societies that can be seen in this modern day. In summary, civilizations and their development, socially, and culturally, have always gone hand in hand, with their religion and its…

The idea that history is a competition between culture with a dominant winner is true and has been proven for centuries no matter which way it is looked at, but cultural synthesis is inevitable to come in any situation. Saying one side is less prevalent than the other is contradicting because there will always be a natural obligation among humans that is centered around the need for being the best. Seeing that this is true, history is a product of cultural synthesis despite the competition found among cultures. To support this claim, the Persian Empire, the Roman Republic, and the Han Dynasty are historical examples between 3300 b.c.e. - 200 c.e. that dominated their surroundings but still brought a significant amount of cultural synthesis to those they conquered.…

In the late first century the author Tacitus addressed the extreme oppression imposed by the Roman empire by writing about the actions of his father-in-law, Agricola. Tacitus even used the enemies of the empire to address the growing immorality that went hand in hand with imperial rule. Tacitus used his writing as a medium of criticism towards the empire by talking about the moral values of a specific few to be contrasted against the empire as a whole. The difference between how the public viewed the empire and what Tacitus wrote offered to the reader a stark contrast of moral and immoral.…

The question is what gives these civilizations the step up to be the power holder, and even further is why or how does this factor change causing them to fall? Taking a look into the early civilization of Egypt one will see great fluctuation in power. They develop into the definition of what civilization is with the domestication of plants and animals, and great advances that follow as thinking is given the chance to flourish. \Those who study history note how human beings conquer other nations and force their cultural beliefs upon them. The victors impose their ideals like religion onto the defeated, abolish their ways of thinking to be replaced by those of the conquerors. Human nature proves thus: humans wish to live in an environment which holds beliefs and mindsets similar to our own. If not, they begin to feel uncomfortable for fear of displacement. The two books Alice in Wonderland and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court explore this desire to alter one’s surroundings.…

Why are we born in certain time frames? Why are we born into certain cultures? All I know is that I absolutely love learning about the Ancient Egyptian culture and period, but I also know for a fact that I would not survive a day in the Egyptian lifestyle. The early Roman domain was quite known through the land; Aggressive, fierce and innovated individuals who were both strong in battle and in society. The Romans considered themselves the best, the people with a strong morality, with the favoritism of the gods themselves; “IV. But the fates, I suppose, demanded the founding of this great city, and the first establishment of an empire, which is now, in power, next to the immortal gods.” Nothing could touch them nor harm them as they were the romans an empire next to the Gods. North Africa, never before invaded by barbarians, and not protected in the West, was therefore rather difficult to reach from southern Spain with ships, where the Vandals were stuck. In 428 the Vandals took over control in North Africa, described in the following terms: „ Finding a province which was at peace and enjoying quiet, the whole land beautiful and flowering on all sides, they set to work on it with their wicked forces, laying it waste by devastation and bringing everything to ruin with fire and murders. They did not even spare the fruit-bearing orchards, in case people who had hidden in the caves and moun-tains would be able to eat the foods produced by them.” (Lect 17, sl. 4)…

Grant’s presence altered significantly the economic organization of the city. The completion of the Illinois Central Railroad, with Cairo as its southern terminus, had spurred increased trade with Chicago and provided a critical linkage to the largest urban hub of the State. Following Grant’s use of Cairo as military headquarters, much of this trade was diverted to Chicago. Nonetheless, the arrival of a large pool of freedmen provided Cairo with a dramatically increased pool of unskilled labor and changed the urban landscape of the city.…

Not much is known about the first two dynasties in comparison to what is known about the last dynasty (McIntosh 2014: 26). The old kingdom began in the 3rd dynasty in 2686 BCE and during that time period the first pyramids were constructed (McIntosh 2014: 26). These pyramids contained gold originated in Nubia, which they traded for timber with the people of Byblos (McIntosh 2014: 26). During the Middle Kingdom, more or less 2040 BCE, Upper- and Lower Egypt were reunited under Mentuhotep II where after the throne was passed to Amenemhat I in 1985 BCE (McIntosh 2014: 26). Amenemhat was known as the founder of the 12th dynasty and he also built a new capital at Itj-tawy, the Kingdom’s administrative “nomes” were fixed (McIntosh 2014: 26).…
