Egoism In Anthem

Imagine not having your own goal in life. My goal is to become successful. I wouldn't want to share that with anybody, but myself. Imagine not being able to get away from anyone. Well, this happened to Equality in the book, Anthem but in America, you can do whatever you want alone. America is the land of opportunity and is based on egoism, not altruism.

To begin with, in the book Anthem, the society of Equality, the main character, was supposed to be altruistic but he didn't want to be. This means that they cared about all of society. It also means that men don't serve for their own sake but rather to help their brothers or help other people. It isn't all about themselves. “ Indeed you are happy,”... “ How else can men be when they live for their brothers?”( Rand 45). This quote means that you can't be happy alone or much less alone in Equality's society. You have to be with your brothers and you can't do anything by yourself. An example is when Equality returned to the Home of the Street Sweepers, one of the authorities asked Equality where he was. He

The two of them are very egoistic. It seems that they don't really care about other people except themselves. For example, Kim Kardashian has her own show along with all of her sisters called Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The show is basically a day in the life of all the Kardashian sisters. Depending on certain episodes, about 1 million to 2 million people watch it.(Maglio). She is an icon for many people because of this show and this shows how she is egoistic.

All in all, America is the land of opportunity and is based on egoism, not altruism. In Anthem, society was altruistic but in America, it is completely different. You don't have to do everything for your brothers, but rather yourself and your family. Americans are more egoistic and you get accepted if you

Loyalty is something people can struggle with. In Anthem, Equality’s loyalty changes throughout the story; in “Prometheus,” Prometheus breaks his loyalty with Zeus and risks his life for the people’s quality of life in his society. In modern-day times, soldiers are loyal to themselves, their team, and their country by not telling secrets even when being tortured. All are examples of how loyalty is portrayed. In Anthem, society expects loyalty between its citizens by having set rules, but the citizens are not loyal to these set of rules, but instead, are loyal to the ones they favor.…

“To be free, a man must be free of his brothers .” This quote is significant to Anthem because the brothers all just follow each other’s lead and they do not make any decisions for themselves. They are not able to pick what they do in their life or what they want to be. They are not really given the chance to think for themselves. The quote states To be free a man must be free of his brother, this is saying that if you take them all away from each other they are going to have to learn to do things on their own.…

In the United States, there is the belief that an individual, no matter who they are or where they come from, has the ability to succeed as long as they work hard for what they want to achieve. This belief is known as “The American Dream”. Despite “The American Dream” being a hegemonic belief, in reality it is not true. Within the United States there are systems that uphold inequality. These systems of inequality make it difficult for certain groups of people to achieve the so-called “American Dream” no matter their abilities.…
