Egg Timer Book Summary

This chapter is about the important items within the book that many readers have overlooked. The thing that the author did but why? It makes no sense. I have found the theme by using the items that stuck out most when the character were killed. The egg timer, the phone, the paper note, the brain, ears and lastly the last word of the chapter, hours. If you look what the symbolized you will see that there is a pattern. But what is the theme?

I think that the egg timer and the phone in Haley’s death have something to do with the theme of the book. In the book, it says that “ her phone was gone but in place of that was the egg timer and it was going off.”(Author’s LN pg #) This evidence shows that this is important because I thought that it was weird for an egg timer. Then the egg timer and phone both mean time. What the heck??? Did the author do this on purpose or what, why??? In conclusion, the egg timer and the phone both have something to do with the theme of the book.

Many themes are portrayed in the novel, “The Things They Carried”, but the two that are consistently shown throughout the book are how prone humans are to guilt and how hard weakness can drive a man to make a decision. O’Brien purposely places stories out of order so that certain themes are mentioned continuously throughout the book, rather than just in one place. Guilt haunts almost every character in the text. At the beginning of the novel, Jimmy Cross feels he is guilty for Ted Lavenders death because he was too busy thinking about Martha when Lavender was shot. Guilt is brought up again towards the middle of the novel when Kiowa dies in the sewage field.…
