Egg Membrane Experiment Essay

Improved Essays
Two experiments were conducted in the span of three days, with the plastic bag membrane experiment taking two days to conduct and the egg shell membrane experiment taking three days. The two experiments took place during the same span of days, with the egg membrane lab carried out first.
The materials used during the egg shell membrane experiment include: one white egg, a plastic cup labeled “egg”, vinegar, distilled water, corn syrup, a tape measure, saran wrap, a triple beam balance, a camera (can be on a phone), and a way to record the data (e.g. pencil and paper). The variable that is manipulated, or the independent variable, is the egg. The variable that is controlled, or the dependent variable, is the liquid (the vinegar, corn syrup, and distilled water) in the cup.
Before the vinegar was added to the solution, the cup’s mass was taken into account and subtracted from the mass of the egg in the cup in order to find the egg’s mass in grams.

The vinegar was next dumped out, and the mass, short circumference, and long circumference of the egg was measured in the same manner as the measurements of the egg without vinegar. The plastic cup was cleaned and the egg was placed back in the cup. Next, the egg was submersed and fully covered in the corn syrup. The cup was then covered in saran wrap. These steps were repeated for the next two days with the corn syrup and the distilled water. The egg was thrown away
The materials used during the plastic bag membrane experiment include: two clean plastic cups labeled “1” and “2”, two clear bags, iodine, cornstarch, a camera (can be on a phone), a graduated cylinder, and a way to record the data (e.g. pencil and paper). The variable that is manipulated, or the independent variable, is the hundred millimeters of water in each cup. The variable that is controlled, or the dependent variable, is the clear plastic bags filled with

    Hypertonic Egg Lab Report

In this experiment I attempted to created and study the affects of a egg in a hypertonic and hypotonic solution. To conduct this experiment I used the following materials: cups, eggs, vinegar, corn syrup, spoons and food coloring. To begin the experiment I placed three eggs in vinegar to dissolve their shells, leaving behind a thin membrane that allowed water to pass in and out of the eggs. The water molecules enter inside the eggs and the eggs begins to swell. Once the eggs have sat in the vinegar for two days I removed one from the vinegar, washed the eggs and placed it in the corn syrup.…

Evaluation When performing the experiment, the pill bugs were generally unresponsive, and many stayed in the same place throughout the whole experiment. Outside of this, no major problems occurred while performing the experiment. If the experiment were to be performed again, more of the IV (baking soda, rubbing alcohol, etc.) would be added to produce a more pronounced effect on the pill bugs, as most pillbugs did not move at all. The results are mostly trustworthy and accurate, as the data is backed up by the research done prior to the experiment. Conversely, more trials could have been performed as experiments with living organisms tend to need a larger sample size.…

The materials given were three raw chicken eggs, vinegar, maple syrup, tap water, and table salt. Prior to beginning the experiment, the raw chicken eggs were saturated in vinegar for two days, in order to remove the outer shell. Also before beginning the experiment, the mass of the glass dish was obtained, via a triple beam balance, for measuring/zeroing purposes. On the day of the experiment, the three raw eggs were removed from their vinegar bath and rinsed under a stream of tap water, running from a faucet. After rinsing, each egg was patted dry, placed in a glass dish, and measured b y a triple beam balance, in order to obtain the initial mass of the egg.…

During this experiment eggs were rolled on paper towels to blot the excess liquid and then weighed. They were then placed into one of six solutions immediately afterwards. In 15-minute intervals, the eggs were blotted and weighed again. This process was repeated four times, adding up to 60 minutes.…

Once the egg was decalcified, it felt very fragile and bouncy. When the egg didn’t have a shell anymore, it was kept from seeping out by the “plasma membrane” (egg white), which was congealed by the soaking in vinegar. When the nucleus of the egg became visible, it looked very cloudy. The substance that entered/left the egg in each situation was water, due to the state of the egg, by way of osmosis, in a way of trying to balance the inside and outside the “cell” (egg), this balance is essential to functioning at the preferred isotonic state. This lab could be improved by using 2 different eggs, as the data seemed inaccurate when placing a hypotonic egg into a solution of corn syrup made the egg hypertonic, because there wasn’t a proper start weight in the egg when placed in the second solution.…

Purpose Ibuprofen is one of the most common over-the-counter medications. It reduces pain and inflammation by limiting certain hormones. The drug is taken orally, usually in the form of a pill, and is absorbed into the bloodstream once it dissolves. Both human saliva and human stomach acid aid in dissolving the pill.…

It was hypothesized that if we place an egg in a low sucrose solution, then it will enlarge or swell, making it a hypotonic solution. The results of this experiment prove this hypothesis was correct. According to the results, as time increased, the weight of the egg also increased. This can be concluded because the low sucrose solution caused the egg to intact the liquid causing it to expand.…

In the data table, each of the stimuli, including the control group without a stimulus, will be written in the left hand column under the title “stimulus”. Next to the stimulus column, there will be three columns titled “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 1 minute”, “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 2 minutes”, and “number of mealworms in stimulus chamber after 3 minutes”. Under each of the three columns relating to the minutes passed, the corresponding data will be collected for each stimulus. The control group is when no stimuli will be placed in the chamber opposite the mealworms and the number of mealworms in the chamber where there was no stimulus will be collected. The constants in the experiment are the…

Experiment 9 “proteins” and the purpose of the lab is to become familiar with some reactions of proteins and some of the tests used to detect proteins. The activities for this experiment includes the following: selected reactions of proteins will be carried out, several tests for proteins will be performed including: biuret test, xanthoproteic test, and millon test. This lab is broken down into two sections: precipitation (coagulation) of egg albumin and color tests for proteins. For the first part, you must observe egg albumin solution before heating and what happen to the solution after heating. Second part, first placed 3 ml of egg albumin solution in a test tube and carefully add 20 drops of concentrated nitric acid, while holding the test…

The main source of error in this experiment was the incubator. To increase of the likelihood of this error not occurring again the class could check the incubators before to make sure they are function correctly or use a different method of comparing different temperatures such as one at classroom temperature and one in a refrigerator. After the conclusion of the experiments in class it was concluded that that all trails conducted of the agar dishes were different. This did not support the second proposed hypothesis because each trail had different diffusion rates. Meaning that the smaller molecules diffused faster than the larger ones.…

First, you fit the opening of the balloon snuggly into the narrowing part of the funnel. Second, you carefully pour in a tablespoon of active dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar into the wide part of the funnel. Once you have all those ingredients settled in the balloon, you're going to remove the opening of the balloon from the funnel. After that, you attach your balloon to the sink where the water comes out from.…

Introduction Density measures the volume that a given amount of mass takes up. Usually, density has grams per unit volume as a unit. To find the density of an object, the object has to be measured and its mass has to be divided by its volume. Often times, density is used to identify substances, since different elements have specific densities. This experiment is made up of two sections; the first section measures the density of water and the density of an unknown substance.…
