Egg Drop Project

For my egg drop project, at first I planned to do a triangle shape around the egg with straws and tape the straws together. Then I changed my project to a square like shaped with enough flexibility to squeeze the egg into it. I used straws because it would “soften” the fall. I also used a parachute to make it a smoother fall. After I completely figured out what I was doing I started building. I hot glued two straws against one straw until I had a square. After I got all the straws glued I used rubber bands to make sure they were secure. The egg was secured by the straws, so I had to glue the straws close enough together. I also made a parachute the parachute slowed the fall down and mad the landing on the straw

Then, the egg was removed from its solution, rinsed in tap water, and placed in a glass. Once in the glass dish, the dish was placed on a triple beam balance, and the final mass was measured and recorded. 29 Minutes after being submerged in tap water, observations pertaining to egg A (the egg submerged in tap water) were recorded, and the egg was removed from its solution, and placed in a glass dish, to be placed on the triple-beam balance. Once on the triple-beam balance, the final mass of egg A was measured and recorded. 28 Minutes after being covered in saltwater, observations of egg C (the egg submerged in saltwater) were made and recorded.…

After soaking the egg in vinegar for a day to remove the shell and not the membrane, I placed the egg in Karo corn syrup because it has a high concentration of dissolved sugar. Although the sugar molecules were too large to pass through the semipermeable membrane of the egg, water molecules were able to exit the egg. After twenty-four hours, the egg had decreased from a mass of 84.1 grams to 47.0 grams due to osmosis. The corn syrup is hypertonic in comparison to the egg and thus the water moved from a high concentration of water in the egg to a lower concentration of water in the syrup in order to reach equilibrium. Subsequently, the corn syrup was diluted in water in order to have an equal concentration of water in the syrup and in the egg itself.…

Raisins aren’t appealing, tasty snacks since they are shriveled and dry but it can change with a can of Sprite into scientific terms that we don’t use often. The demonstration I chose to do is called “Dancing Raisins.” It is a very simple demonstration that only requires a cup of clear carbonated soda and a box of raisins. The purpose of “Dancing Raisins” is to demonstrate how carbon dioxide bubbels cause a change in an object’s density and buoyancy.…

All that was need was less than popsicle sticks, a plastic spoon, some hot glue and of course a rubber band The biggest thing that had to be considered was making stable base so that the catapult could rest on a surface so it could properly. A guide was also constructed so that markings could be placed on it so as to know how far to pull the spoon back that will be discussed later and to help the spoon from shifting so it could fire straight. A hexagon was formed that was used to stop the spoon to make an abrupt motion and as a base to tie the spoon on and hey a catapult should look cool and the hexagon is how The Skittle Hive got its name. The biggest thing was tying the rubber band.…

In this lab, the effects of osmosis on an egg without a shell will be observed; an egg will be submerged in water and then corn syrup. Osmosis, the process of water moving from a low concentrated area to an area of high concentration, is the main theme of this lab. The purpose of this experiment is to view the effects of an egg in a hypertonic state, hypotonic state, isotonic state and diffusion. Hypertonic is the movement of water leaving the egg to an area of higher concentration. When this occurs the egg becomes shriveled.…

When constructing the car, the goal was to make the car as sturdy as possible in order for the car to travel a great distance in a short amount of time. To do this, we researched various ways to create a mousetrap car. Additionally, we incorporated our own ideas to enhance the construction after trial and error. The purpose of this experiment was to understand osmosis, however, the deeper importance was that it could be compared to a real cell in our body. The egg in this lab can represent a red blood cell. When cells such as red blood cells are placed in pure water, water enters them through osmosis and they swell up. If this continues for a long period of time, they have a great chance of bursting. On the other hand, when cells are placed in a lower concentrated solution, water leaves them through osmosis and they are unable to function (BBC).…
