In the media, we find that there is a stigma that revolves around pre-marital sex and the concept of virginity. Through various forms of social media, such as Facebook, there are many posts concerning a multitude of heated controversial topics ranging from abortion, war, and immigration. There are also many posts from religious advocates that disdain sinners by shaming natural processes of life such as sex and frowning upon different sexualities. Obviously, these people are perhaps a bit more radical in campaigning for what they believe in. do not account for all religious individuals so it would be unfair to stereotype them. My father, who was once Agnostic and is now Catholic stated, “A virgin male will be shy, innocent, and try to impress whereas a virgin female is pure, powerful, and reflects on her self-being. However, if this is not the case, then it doesn’t matter if someone is a virgin or not as long as that they are respected and loved.” My mother was very stern on the idea that “age matters when it comes to sex” and that a virgin male is “undesirable because of his inexperience”. I have observed that there is a universal and general trend between all age groups that the idea that virginity in women is desirable and without it they lose a sense of purity or sanctity. However, if a male still has his virginity, then he is unwanted because he lacks a lot of sexual experience. But, if he lost his virginity then he gains some sort of social acceptance and he’s not shamed for it at all. I have inferred that despite one’s religious preference, religion has already subliminally instilled some sort of gender standard that women are impure and dirty if they wish to lose their virginity before marriage and for males it is the complete opposite. Since religion has been extremely influential throughout thousands of years, it’s going to be extremely difficult to eradicate the stigma and gender difference that it has imposed on society today and in previous
