The ramifications of Leopold’s crimes in the Congo could be felt long after his death in 1913. Although he sold the Congo to the Belgium government after the truth regarding his atrocities could not long be denied there was much work that needed to be done to change the fate of the Congolese people. Quote 1: “instead of playing soccer in the village square, I took turn guarding posts around the village, smoking marijuana, and sniffing brown brown,” Reflection: This quote adds to the significant theme of loss of innocence. When I first read this line I could hardly believe what I was hearing, Ishmael doing drugs was a complete shock to me and completely out of his character. This quote shows how Ishmael went from a young boy playing games, with emotion in his soul to a numb boy easing the pain cowardly with drugs. Quote 2: “The idea of death didn't cross my mind at all and killing had become as easy as drinking water.”…

This is the first line in the novel where the title is referenced. I have noticed that in all the books I have read, the line referencing the title is especially powerful and really stands out in your mind as a reader. After I read this quote for the first time, I stopped reading for a couple minutes and stopped to think about both this quote and everything that has led up to it. Everything came full circle. Something about it really made the book click for me, as if a light bulb was turned on.…

People do not really realise how war can take a toll on people and the environment around it. War and romance are the two main points talked about in the book. You realise how each one takes a turn on everyone and how each person is affected in the story. This story is meant to be about war but you realise that it focuses on other things, like the love between some of the couples in the story; so one sees that the story leaves its main focus a lot which is the war and talks about other things like love. For example the love story between Robert Jordan and Maria, which is the central focus in Robert Jordan's own personal story and what is mostly narrated.…

The setting has opened the eyes of the reader to how Elisa’s ranch is separated from other people, as well as she is metaphorically confined to her house and her garden. Knowing that Elisa takes pride in her garden and her house shows the reader that she has to have an outlet for her “over-eager over-powerful” attitude. The setting shows the reader that she is limited in her life to only do what women in that time did such as house work and gardening. The setting taking place in the middle of the winter and Elisa “cutting down the old year 's chrysanthemum stalk” gives the impression of dark, death, and sadness. The setting provides the reader that mood to better understand how Elisa is feeling.…
