Second Wave of Feminism in France Revolutions have been taking place for centuries now, and are acts of rebellion used to initiate change in society. A revolution is usually when a group of people disagree on the ideas and thoughts of the government and want change to better their lives. A revolution, or to be more exact, one (or some) political revolt or protest that has occurred post 1950, is the group of feminist revolts in the Second Wave of Feminism in France. First, in the 1960s French citizens started to recover from World War II. While in recovery, the government demanded for more jobs and work, and there were more job opportunities. Yet, French women were still not given basic rights for daycare for their children, and maternity rights for themselves, so they weren’t given as many job offers. Because of that, many women gathered together and led protests all throughout France. Overtime, more and more women started to become aware of the unfair divisions in society and started to get more passionate about topics like male chauvinism (men who opposed and belittled feminists) and sexism. Secondly, one of the strongest feminist movements that happened during the Second Wave of Feminism was the “Mouvement de Libération des Femmes”, or the “Women’s liberation movement.” The people who were mainly involved in instigating this revolt were, Antoinette Fouque, Monique Wittig, and Josiane Chanel. During this revolt groups and organizations gathered and rebelled against the idea and thought of sexism, and fought for abortion rights, equal opportunities for women , and the idea that women should be able to do what they want to do with their bodies. They also fought for autonomy or freedom from their husbands, and wanted more rights as individuals. Also, this movement was mainly influenced by the revolts that occurred in May 1968, where there were student and worker lead protests (mainly groups of females) against the capitalist government, but also equal wages for women. Almost 11,000,000 workers gathered together and striked. Thirdly, women in France also started to lobby or tried to influence people about certain feminist ideas that disagreed with many French politicians. Also women started to carry out self-help abortions as an act of retaliation.
