How did the Industrial Revolution affect Great Britain? The Industrial Revolution happened from about 1760 to sometime between 1820 and 1840. The Industrial Revolution produced new chemical manufacturing, improved efficiency of water and steam power, and developed machine tools that led to the rise of the factory system. The Industrial Revolution affected Great Britain both positively and negatively. The Industrial Revolution led to industrialization that increased mass production and machines that made production faster and easier. However, it caused serious air pollution and polluted rivers, lakes, and coastal waters with chemicals and other industrial wastes. In addition, it led to women and child labor that was long, hard, and dangerous work.
In the domestic system, the making of cloth was most often a family business. Every family member worked together. They had a personal and socially equal relationship with the merchant who directed the work. They could chat and sing as they worked. Urbanization is the process of turning a rural area or village into a town or city. The population highly increased by the urbanization by having a lot of factories that supplied products in large quantities at low costs. There was one major negative effect of the urbanization, it was pollution. Smoke from factories polluted the air. Chemicals and other industrial wastes polluted rivers, lakes, and coastal waters. Raw sewage rapidly expanded to towns and cities.(Teachtci pg 227).
