Have you or anyone you know been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder? “Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences” (What is Autism?).It is actually not uncommon to be affected by Autism, whether it be from yourself or a family member. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 59 children in the United States. One of the most important things to remember as a parent of a student with Autism is that there are rights that are on your side to make sure your student has the correct tools to succeed and have a fair education in their school. “Many laws have been put into place to enable a smooth transition into the proper learning process for each individual child with special needs. Check with your local, state and federal resources to inquire about such legislation” (Ways Technology Can Aid ASD Students in the Classroom).Many suggested strategies for students with ASD include using the picture exchange communication system, video modeling, visual supports, cues and schedules, peer tutoring, social stories, the utilization of visual processing, and sociodramatic play and improvisation …show more content…
Other studies show that when given a choice, adolescents with ASD prefer to access and use technology for social and leisure activities (Odom, et.al, 2014). Advances in technology have made it possible to use said technology to improve and enhance the quality of life for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Internet use, online communities, robotics, assistive and prompting devices, computer-aided instruction, interactive metronomes, video modeling, video instruction, virtual reality, voice output communication devices, and computer play are just a few of the ever growing list of ways technology has changed their lives. Electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers have provided new ways of communicating, socializing, and learning, as well as employment
