Over the course of our lives we learn what norms, values, and social practices are acceptable and unacceptable. At a very young age, each individual starts to go through a process called socialization. In our book socialization is defined as, “the social processes through which children develop an awareness of social norms and values and achieve a distinct sense of self” (Giddens, 2013, p.69). When you think back to your childhood, you can remember your parents, family, or even teachers telling you if you did something that was acceptable or not. As you got older there were other agents of socialization, “groups or social contexts”, that made you wonder if you were being socially acceptable. Many of us create friendships through school that usually will last through most of our lives. We become friends with people that have common interests and goals. Our friends help to create our identity and help us to understand who we really are, also where and how we fit in society. In society we become friends with people based on common interests like whether we have similar taste in music or not. Music can be a major aspect that helps people feel more connected with their friends. For example, in my group of friends many of us like the same type of music, we like to do outdoor activities, and we like to go to the movies. If there are ever any concerts or music festivals that have a lot of artists that we like, then we will usually all buy tickets to go. This is one way friends influence us, many people would go to a concert with their friends, but many would not go alone because it does not seem socially acceptable. Friendships help us create an identity and influence us through the socialization process. Socialization is a process that each individual goes through his or her whole lifetime. All agents of socialization influence us, however the main ones help us realize what is acceptable or not. Family helps form our first systems of beliefs and this is where social reproduction occurs. The mass media and friends help to play a significant role in the process as well as throughout the rest of our lives. These factors play a huge role in helping to determine social roles and
