It is important to have strong social connections with parents, making them feel welcomed and cared for. Strong social connections make it easy for teachers to get a deeper insight on the problems needing to be addressed. The more aware teachers are of social problems the more resources; support and help can be given. Poverty is hard to combat, because there are several factors that can contribute to low income. At Westcliff Elementary outside resources are often offered from local churches and organizations. At the beginning of the school year two local churches combine and donate backpacks and school supplies for the children. A backpack and school supplies is great help to any family struggling to make ends meet, especially when there are multiple children in a family. In addition to providing school supplies both churches provide school uniforms for families in need. Throughout the year churches provide support to families in need. Around thanksgiving churches provide thanksgiving dinners, and around Christmas the church provides dinner and gifts. There are other organizations like Salvation Army that will support the family during Christmas. One of the greatest struggles seen at Westcliff Elementary and other schools is the need for glasses. As an educator it is critical to a child’s developments and education that teachers understand that social problems are very real, and affect the lives of students on a daily basis. Social problems are not thing s that can be fixed once, and ignored the rest of the time. Social problems are part of an ongoing battle that prevents students from reaching educational goals.
