The Negative Consequences Of Social Networking

The majority of people are so hooked on to social networking, that it is now a difficult addiction to overcome. Everyone is in their own little world with a device that keeps us updated about everyone else’s little world. Back in the days, my parents gave me my first phone because I need it in high school, but now, babies are being handed a phone to keep them calm and quiet. We think we are going into a better future, but we are ruining it already by introducing the device to children. Some of the consequences of social networking can lead to a negative impact in the usage of language, distract us from living in the moment, and change our true identity, which can ruin our friendships and the community.

In the article, “I tweet, Therefore I Am,” by Peggy Orenstein, she believes that everything she tweets is a side of her she is demonstrating to the world. Orenstein loves to spend time with her daughter, but she also loves to spend time in her Twitter account, twitting about her mesmerizing moment with her daughter. Orenstein says that eventually everything she posts is a picture of who she believe she is. “Yet the final decision was not really about my own impressions: it was about how I imagined it and wanted others to react to them…I began to wonder, was I shaping my Twitter feed, and how much was Twitter shaping me?” states Orenstein(253). I believe that sometimes we use social media for validation and we tend to share to the world how good our lives are or can be. We have the necessity to always share the good moments, but we take away the essence of it. I’m sure Orenstein believes her addiction to twitter is wrong, but sometimes we lose control of what we’re used to doing every moment. That is when Twitter begins to be more important than the actual experience we’re living. This is something I’m struggling with myself, but with an app known as Snapchat. Snapchat is an app that allows you to send videos and photos with or without a caption to your friends. It is fun to use, but it becomes a habit. In the article “I Tweet, Therefore I am” a professor named Sherry Turkle states, “But because you’re also creating something for others’ consumption, you find yourself imagining and playing to your audience more and more. So those moments in which you’re supposed to be showing your true self become a performance.”(253) The advantage that people may have is that you get to build the personality you want everyone else to see. We forget about ourselves, and begin to prioritize what others think of us. There’s a TV show called “Catfish” where two complete strangers fall in love in the internet, yet they’ve never met in person. Through their journey one of them finds out that their love has a false identity. They get to see who their loved one really looks like and find the reason why they lied about their fake profile. Many in the end become devastated and upset. This reveals that these fake profilers have insecurities that provoke them to hide their true identity in order to be accepted in the community. I believe people should be and show who they really are despite of their appearances because you never know how much pain you can cause to the other
