50% of teenagers in America have approached someone they are interested in by liking or messaging them on a social media app. Men in the 1950’s would approach a girl by calling them and asking them to go on a date. Some of the men who did not have phones would ask the girl out in person. The most a boy would do in this time is direct message a girl or text them. Nowadays, couples are not even dating they just call themselves a “fling”. The increase in social media has effected teen relationships because, no one goes on real dates anymore, most guys just like what they view on social media and girls getting treated the wrong way. In place of boys calling girls pretty or beautiful, they text them and call them “hot.” Some girls could take this as a compliment, but it is very different then being called beautiful. Most guys will not even compliment a girl they will just like their post and comment an emoji. Teenage boys think this is equivalent to telling a girl they look nice or calling them pretty. Boys have become cheap and stopped getting girls flowers or surprising them with chocolate. In today’s generation a girl will get a text with heart emojis or a nice phone call. It is heartbreaking how technology has changed the way relationships are today. Many people would agree that relationships should go back to the way they used to be. Overall, social media has had a negative effect on teenage relationships. Not only has it made them worse, but also put the standards extremely low for finding a great partner.
