Social media has exploded in popularity over the past few decades. Today, the average person will access a social media source everyday and possibly multiple times everyday. With this growing popularity, public safety officials such as the police force are finding it to be advantageous to have a presence in social media. As a 21st century law enforcement organization, I believe that it is a wise decision on the part of the police to have a social media page. Having this presence on,social media is just like the police having a news outlet which they can control and make sure that information is presented to the public in a positive manner in regards to the law enforcement agency and its officers. Also, as a member of the civilian populations do find it to be beneficial to be following law enforcement on social media. …show more content…
I have followed the Aurora Police Department on Facebook for several years now and I believe it to have been a good decision for me. The Aurora Police Department posts about many different issues such as current community events, breaking news in the world of law enforcement, traffic alerts, and such. Having previously resided in that area and gong about tat area on a daily basis, I found the traffic alerts and warnings to be very helpful. For example, if I am going out of town, it helps to see on Facebook If there was a serious accident and there is currently multiple lane closures because then I know that it is probably best to take an alternate route. Also, if there have been several break ins or an increased crime rate in a certain neighborhood, then it would let me know that traveling to these areas is probably not a good idea at this
