We live in a world of vast amounts of information. This information is readily available through the use of technology. Information comes in the form of online news articles, journals, social media, and YouTube videos. Of all the sources of information, students use social media the most. Since social media is easy to use, the reach and ability to interact with others has steadily increased especially in younger generations. Social media is prevalent in households, workplaces and schools. The use of social media can affect the productivity and performance in the workplace and schools. The purpose of this study and review will be on the effects of social media on education in schools and university students. The effect and use of social media usage on education should not be overlooked. According to Junco al et (2010), “social media are a collection of internet websites, services, and practices that support collaboration, community building, participation, and sharing”. Of THE 430 students, 97% said they used social media with the most frequently used site being Facebook followed by YouTube (90.7%), Twitter, Myspace, blogs, ad LinkedIn. One of the results that the study concludes is that there is a negative relationship between time spent on social networks and an individual’s grades. The study shows there is a significant difference in the amount of time spent on YouTube. GPA between 2.00 to 2.50 and 3.50 to 4.00 spent less time watching videos than those with a GPA between 2.50 to 3.00 and 3.50. Likewise, there was a significant difference in the amount of time spent on Facebook. Those with 3.50 or higher GPA spent an average of 31 to 45 minutes a day on Facebook. However, students with a GPA of 2.50 to 3.00 and 3.00 to 3.50 spent an average of 46 to 60 minutes a day while those with a GPA below 2.50 spent 61 to 90 minutes a day on
