French sociologist Emile Durkheim is noted as the founder of the theory of social integration, and although it’s mainly linked to suicide, it is applicable in this film. Zulema’s parents in the film admit to not graduating from high school, but speak broken English. This is a result of their social integration that developed once they moved to the United States. The family remains in their own circle, disregarding the effects that the outside world brings them. Children would commonly not go, or simply drop out of school to work, and it was accepted by the community. Now in the year 2016, that migrant workers of all ages disregard schooling and continue this practice. An English speaking migrant will make much more money compared to someone who only speaks their native language. In the film, we see the migrant kids from infancy to pre-adulthood participate in the fields, much like that of 20th century America. These kids would achieve much more success in their lives with schooling, but being as their family raised them that the plantation is the only way to go, they choose the latter. While the access to schooling and proper health care for the children is there, it is not taking advantage of. The social lag that the migrant experience puts them in a spot where they cannot better themselves to achieve their dreams. The agricultural system only trains its workers in hard labor and grueling endurance. For example, if a French family were to migrate to the U.S, the father and mother would strive for a fair job, while the son be placed in schooling like a regular United States citizen. This act can also be observed through many monumental moments in history. The Russian Space Race only happened because American’s witness Russia’s progression into space and we ultimately followed in their footsteps. Americans also benefit from the cultural diffusion, as the demand for fresh fruits and vegetables has been at an all-time high. This forces migrant workers into fields for hours so that Americans can get the fresh fruit and vegetables that we desire. This is also what gives the father in the movie power to continue despite his sickness. The Father is admiring how well Americans lives and pictures that happy life with his family. Americans are constantly adapting to new changes in their society and it makes life for migrants much harder to adapt to. Cultural diffusion also benefits societies. If it wasn’t for cultural diffusion, our society wouldn’t have Taco Bell’s or Chinese Takeout. With these new innovations in societies, we experience cultural leveling. With the help of modern technology, cultural leveling keeps cultures in similar regions of development.
