Research shows that teenagers need 9.5 hours of sleep, but on average they only get 7.5 hours. From ‘The Mobile Youth Report’, 81% of youth under 25 sleep with their phone beside them on the bed whilst 78% of them will find their phone immediately after waking up. The Guardian found that teenagers who engage with social media at night could be increasing their risk of anxiety, depression and deteriorated immunity. Teenagers are under pressure to constantly make themselves available. The growth of time spent on social media could lead to social isolation, loneliness, heart disease, cancer and dementia. Some people claim that young people can control themselves; they can turn off or log out their phone or computer at night. They are saying that using social media is a way to share feelings and release mental stresses after their busy daily lives. However, 88% of the surveyors said they could not control themselves or manage their time on social media. UCLA scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without using a smartphone, television, or other digital screen did better at reading human facial emotion than the sixth graders who spend hours using electronic devices. A study conducted by ‘Yazino’; found that fewer people are interacting in person and social media may begin to affect their ability to properly communicate.
