Smoking Cigarettes It’s almost as if some people think that a pack a day keeps the doctor away by how much they smoke. In reality, smoking is extremely detrimental on your health and the health of the people around you. Most people start smoking as teens due to peer pressure, and the need to fit in. Not only is smoking an immensely hard habit to break and can affect more than just the smoker, but it is also a very costly habit, it reduces their ability to perform activities that require endurance, and it causes serious harm to their body. The nicotine in cigarettes causes addiction to this product to be an exceedingly easy thing to do. Also, if someone starts smoking at a young, and possibly illegal, age then it causes quitting to be very difficult. Studies suggest that children and teens may be especially sensitive to nicotine, making it easier for them to become addicted (Nicotine Addiction and Your Health). The health risks of smoking are not worth getting that good feeling from nicotine. Cigarettes are filled with other chemicals besides the nicotine you’re seeking, and those chemicals can do very bad things to your body. There are over 7,000 chemical compounds in cigarettes, more than 250 of these are known to be harmful, and at least 69 are known to be cancer causing (Secondhand Smoke). There is also tar in cigarettes that coats a smoker’s lungs more and more every time they take a puff, and that’s what makes it so hard to breathe. Smoking cigarettes is related to several types of cancers that cause the deaths of millions of people each year. It also causes accelerated aging, and even a faster death too.
