Sleep Deprivation in College Students Many college students have experienced sleep deprivation and are unaware of it. Several studies have found that the amount of sleep one receives can affect their academic achievements as well as their mental health. There are numerus consequences from sleep deprivation that may make students rethink their sleeping habits. Author Yugantara concluded that, “Sleep disturbances were present in majority of college students with day time sleepiness as its commonest manifestation.” It is important student are aware of what sleep deprivation is, symptoms of it, why college students specifically are affected by it, and possible solutions for it. An article called Influence of Various Lifestyle and Psychosocial Factors on Sleep Disturbances among the College Students: A Cross-Sectional Study from an Urban Area of India concluded through their study that, “The mean duration of sleep reported by the 900 study subjects was 7.3 hours (std. deviation 1 hour). Any sleep disturbance was reported by 826 (91.8%) subjects; with day time sleepiness (77.5%) and difficulty in falling asleep (65.4%) being the commonest complaint.” Another study by Perez Gracie Carrillo reports that a very high number of college students are pulling all-nighters in addition to not receiving the proper amount of sleep; “Seven out of ten students surveyed in the library admitted to having pulled an all-nighter to get an assignment completed on time.” College students specifically are prone to experience sleep deprivation due to many reasons such as, prolonged exposure to blue light, stress, and heavy scheduling. Blue light is something produced by many electronics and can effect sleeping habits if exposed to it for too long. Authors Mariana G. Figueiro, Brittany Wood, Barbara Plitnick, Mark S. Rea write, “Since these electronic devices tend to have a strong short-wavelength component for good color gamut, they may be effective sources for suppressing nocturnal melatonin or may delay the onset of melatonin in the evening.” Since …show more content…
