According to Whitehouse.gov, One in five women are sexually assaulted while in College. College academia and its atmosphere can be frightening, but students need to be educated and be given the tools to increase their personal security. Lack of awareness leaves some students careless to the threat of sexual assault.
Unfortunately, trauma is often the result of sexual assault. According to the Healthy place America 's Mental Health Channel it is very common for the victim to blame themselves for what happened to them; they use self- blame as an avoidance- based coping tool. Victims are hurting themselves without even knowing it, self- blame in many cases slows down or even stop the healing process. This club will allow the students to learn, benefit, and make a difference as well as those that surround them. They may never know when they could be in a situation where they are the only person around to help a sexual assault victim, or be a victim themselves. The club would be opened for anyone that would like to join. It would not be mandatory, for student that aren 't taking psychology, however, for those that are, the club would be mandatory. The club would only be mandatory to those that are in psychology due to several of the psychology teachers overlooking the whole operation. This will give the opportunity for psychology students to help others, for example with emotional problems, PTSD and thoughts of suicide. The way this club will work is once plenty of students have joined they meet at least twice a week. Each meeting they will discuss new ways to prevent sexual assault. Members of the club that are properly trained in self-defense, can volunteering to monitor the campus late at night in pairs and monitor the campus
