In the video, the child was abused but lied at first when the officer asked. The officer explained he tries to gain victims trust, especially children. He walked the child victim through what was going to be happening. The officer wanted to show the child that she could trust the police because they were there to help out. Asking what happened several different times did get the child to admit her mother had hit her and not that she had hit the table.
Pictures were taken of the victim, suspect/victim mom, and suspect dad. Whole body pictures and then photos of any injuries with and without a scale were taken. The scale shows variations of discoloration and can also help with showing what size the injury might have been. Officers must collect evidence with gloves on and then place it in a brown paper bag instead of a plastic bag. The officer said, “You want to place evidence in a porous bag for preservation and plastic is not porous.” Documentation must be done both with any communications or any statements made and evidence including the victim’s injuries because children often recant and the best documented cases can still move forward in the criminal justice system. The cycle of violence is when the mother is a victim of spousal abuse but then physically abuses her own child in return. The spouse had backhanded the wife because she did not make dinner good enough and she pissed him off. The mom in turn hit the child with a telephone cord and grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises. Children suffer from abuse in the worst ways. They can be followed for life from stress, trauma, and fear because of physical or sexual abuse. They may behave inappropriately, get arrested and spend time in jail or be in troubled relationship, later in life. Some abused children revert to bed-wetting or thumb-sucking. They could run away from home or show sexual misconduct they learned through abuse. Cutting or burning themselves is another way some abuse victim’s will act out. Child maltreatment was given a more broad definition to include failure to act and included any act that can pose serious harm immediately. Violence against children is considered a public health crisis by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and abuse and neglect are deemed a high priority health problem by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC). Our entire society feels the effects of child abuse. Economic and social costs are paid for by everyone. Expenses for medical care, court proceedings, police protection, foster homes, alcohol and drug treatment, and incarceration all add up
