Physically a victim may become pregnant after an attack or acquire health issues such as wounds or S.T.D.s. Pregnancies resulting from rape are a circumstance fought socially and politically in today’s society. Every year there are approximately 32,000 pregnancies that resulted from rape. (“Child Custody Rights for Rapists?”) Rape culture can be seen concerning both abortion rights and custody rights in these pregnancies. In the case of abortion some states have put in place strict rules and regulations for someone who wants to terminate a pregnancy, making it seem like the body of the victim isn't under their control anymore. This shows rape culture by dehumanizing the victim and taking away even their most basic rights to their own body. Custody rights is also an idea that shows how society views rape. In 31 states in the United States the rapist can gain parental rights of a child. (“Child Custody Rights for Rapists?”). This means that even after an attack a victim can still have to deal with the person that assaulted them. Again this shows how rape culture is written in the law of 31 states, because it is legal for a person who committed a crime of sexual assault to be able to have their victim legally bound to them through a child. This is also terrible for the child's safety due to the fact the other parent is a rapist and could possibly sexual assault that child. These physical results can be harder for the public to ignore because they are, for the most part, visible. On the other hand the mental effects can also have a lasting impact on the victim’s sense of security. For example after cases of rape victims have three times the chance of developing depression, and their likelihood of suffering from ptsd is six times higher than those who have not been raped.
