What Is Racism In Sports

In the past five years there has been a steady increase of racism in the United States. While it may be more subtle than in the past it is still evident that it occurs often. It is incredibly noticeable in the media and occasionally in sports. Where it is most visible is in racial profiling. Police and other officials jump to completely different conclusions when it comes to black people, officials almost always assume that if the person is black that they are most likely doing something wrong. What people commonly fail to realize is that most crimes committed recently are hate crimes. Hate crimes include anything done to a person based on race, sexual orientation, or religion. Racism has become quite apparent in the media and in sports broadcasting. There have been many problems, especially as of late with the Ferguson trials. Racism is unacceptable because it makes people feel uncomfortable in their own homes. Racism is one of the world’s major issues today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our sports, televisions, and police stations across the nation.

One of the biggest problems that occurs is within the media. If you ever sit down and watch TV chances are the leads on the show are most likely white. This is due to racism in the media. Because whites see themselves as superior they are more likely to put their own kind as main characters on shows, there are very few shows that are actually centered around black families, or a black person. Not only are these main characters white, they are also straight and male.There is very little diversity in all categories, the most common protagonist of a show is a straight, white, male. Not only is there an issue with TV shows, but an issue has always been present with racism in sports. The stereotypes about certain races has in some ways helped the African American races gain popularity, but in some ways brought them down by making them look like objects. The first sport to integrate was baseball, but it came with unwritten rules. One was that there should never be over four out of nine blacks on the field at once. People followed the rule because if too many blacks started to play they would lose a great deal of their fans, and therefore their money. The problem that often arises with sports doesn’t come from the players it comes from the sportscasters and the people behind the scenes. Jimmy Snyder, a sportscaster, once said that the reason blacks made such good running backs is because they were evolved from their slave ancestors who had great legs built for working.
