The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) shows that around 22% of white students are performing under the basic reading level for their age, while 57% of African-Americans, and 51% of Latinos are performing below the same level (Smith and Kozleski). In 2002, nearly a third of high schools that were primarily minority graduated less than 50% of their class, but in schools that are more than 90% white, only 2% had a similar record (Orfield and Lee). As shown in the statistic, students that American high schools are graduating are at very low educational levels. When these students enter the working world, due to their lack of education, they slow down processes. They allow for a sharp decline in productivity and decrease the amount of structure and support the government has. Without educated citizens, it is difficult to fill important positions that control and regulate all of the important areas of American affairs. It always finds a way to prevail even in the most basic scenarios. The connection of racism in education directly affects most other forms. Without equally educated citizens, racism and segregation will always be present. If one group feels at a disadvantage, that group will naturally have animosity towards a more fortunate one. Prejudice in schools and educational settings is harmful to America because it creates a divided country and demonstrates the government’s neglect for funding all groups equally.
