What are the effects of racism and prejudice in our society? The effects of racism has caused separation between the races, stereotypes, and discrimination. On the website Brainy Quotes.com, the author Nina Simone states that “ The worst thing about that kind of prejudice.. is that while you feel hurt and angry and all the rest of it, it feeds you self doubt. You start thinking perhaps I am not good enough’’ (Simone). Since black people are being separated, stereotyped, and discriminated by the other races, that has caused people to feel like they don't belong.
One of the effects of racism prejudice has caused separation between each race. In Chapter 12, Calpurnia invited Jem and Scout to come to her church. When Lulu saw them walking into the church, she said to Jem and Scout " Stop right there nigger... you ain't got no business bringin' white chillum here ---- they got their church, we got our'n '' (Lee

Since Dolphus Raymond was married to a black person, the people of Maycomb think he is a drunk, and also a bad person that doesn't know what he is doing. People think he is a drunk because he usually carries a paper bag that has a drink in it. They think it’s alcohol but it’s actually Coca-Cola in the bag. In the book, the author states “ Secretly, Miss Finch, I’m not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that’s the way I want to live’’ (Lee 268). Dolphus lets the people believe that he is a drunk because he wants them to think that’s why he enjoys being around black people. In Conclusion, the book “ To Kill a Mockingbird ” shows that racism and prejudice relates to what is happening in our society today. Racism and prejudice has caused separation between the races which makes the opposite race feel unwanted, stereotyping which caused people to judge each other, and discrimination which has caused people to believe rumors that aren't

The people of Maycomb are significantly affected by racism and prejudice. Although there are many examples of this present throughout the text, I will be highlighting three of them; the first one being the Tom Robinson’s case. Another example of this is the bullying Jem and Scout receive as a result of Atticus defending Tom Robinson in court. The last example I’m going to share is the town's disapproval of Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s interracial relationship. All of these examples support my thesis of racism and prejudice being extraordinarily present in maycomb.…

No one appreciates the notion of sharing religious places with the opposing group. Half way through chapter 12, when Calpurnia, a colored care-taker of the Finches ', takes the white kids, Jem and Scout, to a black church, Lula makes rude remarks: “ I wants to know why you bringin’ white chillum to a nigger church…stop right there, nigger” (Lee 119). Lula, a black woman in the “nigger church”, did not enjoy the presence of white people, even if they were just children. By stopping the entrance of the new, unwanted people, Lula emphasized the authority of the black church, separating religion as…

The Light in a Dark Room “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” (Rosa Parks). That quote was said by Rosa Parks, the black seamstress who ignited the flame of America’s civil rights movement after she stayed seated when asked to leave her seat for a white man. Her courage to stand up to social norms gave way to equal rights for all races. In the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, there are many acts of courage that reflect modern-day events with others standing up for what they believe in.…

Racism is very common in Maycomb, it is also a very important part of the whole story. Tom Robinson, who is black, is accused of raping Mayella Ewell. The jury convicts Tom Robinson because of the color of his skin. His entire life was badly affected by racism, even though Tom was honest in his testament, the jury sided with Bob Ewell because he was white. People tend to be racist for many reasons, including to boost their self-esteem and to prove their superiority. In the novel, racism was shown during the trial, at Calpurnia’s church, and through the ways Aunt Alexandra views Cal. All of these points considered, it can be made clear that the real-life events that Harper Lee included in her book To Kill a Mockingbird have connections to the Jim Crow laws, mob mentality, and…
