Instead of educating the students on racial disparity the teachers promoted racial segregation. One teacher admitted placing the “rednecks” and the black students on opposite sides, stationing herself in the middle of the classroom to suppress conflict between the two (Hardie 2013). The advanced classes consisted of 98 percent of middle class white students while the “rednecks”, Hispanics and black students attended the classes that were not big on academics showing the racial disparity in the classrooms. This is an issue because the schools are more likely to put funding in schools with wealthy white folks rather than poorer black folks. Because of this, black students receive inferior education to the whites. This is just like what happened before Brown V. Board of Education, the black students did not get equal resources or education. In this article Feagin and Barnett mentioned that students of color show more positive effects on academics when going to school of predominantly white students. Public schools have become more focused on education than on the facts of withholding students based on race or any discriminating features. According to a study done in 2004, it was found that school desegregation ultimately transformed the individuals “who lived through it” (“How Desegregation Changed Us: The Effects of Racially Mixed Schools on Students and Society”). In addition, it made a wide range of students attending these schools more accommodating to people of different cultures and less discriminatory. Many students of different ethnic backgrounds and races highly appreciated the day-to-day cross between each race in their high schools. This is still relevant today believe it or not. The money that goes to schools is from the area people live in, so if you live in poorer less wealthy area your education won't be as good. The system we live in is still corrupt,and we still do have problems, but in the future we can only hope that they will be fixed with time and cooperation. We can look back and see how just a little under 60 years ago it was unheard of to even attend school with someone of a different skin color than you. In response to Julys, radio program titled “this American life” which shed more light on a subject that I have come to question, that is of “white privilege” found in the education system. Segregation plays an enormous role in the history of America. During the nineteen fifties white American children had access to neighborhood schools, whereas black children had to travel several miles outside of their neighborhoods to go to school. In some instances, black children were ten minutes away from a nearby all white school, but had to travel an hour by car to go to an all-black school. This was happening before Brown v. Education was taken into effect, now known as a landmark in the education history of the United States. The authors concluded that the gap in educational performance across racial groups continues. Other researchers believed that minority families themselves are the reason for these disparities.
