The 18th amendment took place on January 16, 1919. It was passed to keep alcohol out of the nation and better the lives of the american citizens. The american government and the senate were split in two when they wanted to pass the volsted act, “In the House, the vote was 282 to 128, with the Democrats voting 141 in favor and 64 in opposition; and the Republicans voting 137 in favor and 62 in opposition, The ratification of the Amendment was completed on January 16, 1919, when Nebraska became the 36th of the 48 states then in the Union to ratify it.” (Behr 112). Eventually the amendment was passed down to the entire nation not to completely ban alcohol in the U.S, but to make it difficult to buy alcohol legally. Also under the amendment, a group named the prohibition agents made their lives by catching anyone with alcohol and destroying alcohol by dumping the liquid down a nearby sewage drain. the only ones that were left supporting the 18th amendment were people living in the rural part of the U.S. Most americans believed that prohibition caused more problems than it tried to solve. Then in 1937, the 21st amendment was passed down in congress to what the government calls “repeal” the 18th amendment, as in get rid of it. It is amazing what people would do to get what they want and when they want it. Going to such lengths just to prove a point that they are trying to make. Whether it be killing others trying to make a quick buck, or hiding things someplace that was not meant to hide things. Going to extreme Criminal lengths to get something you want is absurd. When america went dry, people did stuff to a point where they were drinking poison or somebody else 's dirty bath water. Makes me wonder what america will try to prove
