Redesign of equipment, shock mounting assemblies, and physical barriers in the workplace are included in the many changes that have taken place to protect workers. Until the 1970s, the government did not see noise pollution as an environmental issue, but rather as an annoyance and “nuisance.” Laws to reduce noise pollution are vastly varied in different places and some areas do not even have laws and ordinances that are set to protect against unwanted sound. This presents a problem to residents and animals in the surrounding areas. Although people do suffer from the effects of noise pollution, there is something worse. Because of modern technology, items such as MP3 players and ipods have perhaps had an even worse impact on people than the noise pollution that already existed in the environment. Elderly men and women used to suffer the most from hearing loss because of a lifetime of exposure to harmful sounds. However, teenagers are now causing even more damage to their ears because of earphones that deliver sound directly into the ear. The more often teens use the earphones, the more damage they are causing. After years of listening to music at a certain volume through these new technologies, people find themselves “getting used” to the volume at which it was originally set. The effects of noise pollution and music players combined could be extremely severe. Hearing loss is also sadly irreversible. Once it is gone, it’s gone for good. Many people believe that noise pollution isn’t truly an environmental problem such as global warming and water pollution. However, noise pollution has caused some serious damage to the natural activity of ecosystems. Humans and animals suffer the most from this kind of pollution as it may potentially cause some very serious health issues. It also has the potential to interfere so greatly with the lives of animals that they may die because of it. As previously mentioned, steps and precautions have been made in order to prevent health problems caused my noise pollution. It is also the responsibility of the people to protect themselves. Time spent listening to ipods and CD players must be limited and items must play at low volumes. It is also important to protect your ears by wearing earplugs when attending a concert or helping at a construction site. Whatever the scenario may be, it is vital that everyone keeps in mind that hearing loss is irreversible and that protection against noise pollution is
