It is not only the mental effects on children from their parents but also the physical ones that are problematic. Mothers who use substances with addictive properties during their pregnancies, and the week before the baby's birth can lead to the new-born being born addicted to that substance resulting in neonatal abstinence syndrome often referred to as NAS (Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome). Withdrawal symptoms can happen almost immediately, commonly these newborns are treated by having small amounts of that substance introduced to their system slowly to ease the newborn off of the drug, as done with drug addicts and alcoholics.
