Introduction The church-state relationship has varied in various cultures over time. It is my belief that church and state are “distinct but mutually influential.” Church and state have distinct areas of responsibility, and those responsibilities should be exercised with mutual respect and negotiated influence and authority. (McQuilken & Copan, 2013). Additionally, I believe that the church has an obligation to deal with world poverty.…

John Winthrop and Jonathan Edward’s sermons both relate to the puritan ideas; both create a call to action telling the people exactly what they should do in order to be considered faithful puritans. They are trying to influence people to view their ideas and believe in them. Although there are major significant similarities there are also extreme differences in the sermons due to the huge time gap between when these sermons were expressed to the people. The enlightenment time period, and the aging and evolving of the colonies both had a magnificent contribution on the tone, and drive of each sermon. John Winthrop’s sermon “A Model of Christian Charity” conveyed in 1630 at the very beginning when colonies were just starting to form, the wide…

Several years before, the Board of Regents had written a prayer for the purpose of “supplementing the training of the home, ever intensifying in the child that love for God…which is the mark of true character, training, and a sure guarantee of a country’s welfare.” The recommended prayer read: Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our Country. A substantial amount of local pubic school boards adopted it to be read at the beginning of every school day.…

However, as it currently stands, in many cases, those would-be tax dollars are being directly deposited into the pockets of greedy, corrupt clergymen that care less about what is in your heart and more about what is in your wallet. Bear in mind that the Church of Scientology brings in $500-550 million every year, according to an article by L. Christopher Smith for Entrepreneur. This church earns more in a year than most people will see in their entire lifetime, and yet none of it goes to the IRS; it remains in the money-grubbing hands of the church’s leaders. The Church of Scientology is not a unique case; the same truth applies to numerous other large religious organizations, making the story of the single mother and the pastor a largely truthful…

According to Cordes, O’Hare and Steuerle the table above represented the change that occurred in tax revenue and charitable giving based on four options. In option one, if all non-itemizers were allowed to deduct their charitable contributions starting from the first dollar given the results support previous claims that the increase in giving to charities does not outweigh the cost of tax revenue (3). Option two took a different approach and proposed to add a floor of $500 to those non-itemizers who file jointly and $250 for those who file single. In order to take a deduction, the contribution had to be in excess of the floor set for the individual. By limiting the deduction, it is seen that the revenue cost became lower while the amount of extra giving that was encouraged did not significantly increase considering the floor provided the subsidy to extra giving rather than giving that would have occurred without any incentive (Cordes, O’Hare & Steuerle 4).…

During the early 1730s New England colonies shifted from a heavily based Puritan society into a business oriented society. Life for colonists at this time became more solely focused around working and about business, leaving no time for practicing Puritanism. Religion soon became something of a past time, in which people would attend church less frequently and with less deeply-felt convictions as before. The Great Awakening was the result of a spiritual dryness among Protestant believers in the colonies. Noticing this lack of commitment, ministers set out to restore and renew the people’s faith.…

Early America was the site of two very different colonial experiments in early 17th century Chesapeake and New England. This difference was particularly true of the inhabitants of each colony who would imagine, invent and respond to political authority in very different ways. Both colony’s political structure would emerge as a consequence of its founding ethos, the character of its peoples, and the internal and external pressures it faced. Chesapeake political authority was constructed according to the colony’s mercantile and imperial origins and would only change when its economic viability was threatened by internal violence and socio-demographic collapse. In contrast, New English political authority was founded on the basis of Puritan…

The struggles caused by economic disparity and the concentration of wealth has impacted people since the beginning of time. The imbalance can be examined through many different lenses and time periods. Examples can be traced from the days of Jesus to the present time. The problem of economic disparity will likely never go away, but it should not worsen throughout the years like it has especially in recent years in America. The church is not immune from this issue.…

Equally, I believe that gentrification needs to be better regulated by the government. The way the government controls it currently takes away all the power from the residents. The inhabitants are the ones who put them in office and then the government does them a disservice. In the documentary (2012), even when the community members went to town halls, protested, offered alternatives and pleaded the administration went ahead with the development anyway. At the meeting one government official even said that the displaced business was "not of substantial economic benefit to the city" but what is really the definition of economic benefit.…

Among the first industries in the Northwest Ohio region were bicycle and farm wagon factories, setting the stage for the automobile industry, which would flourish in the 20th century. However, the industrial base was found in the glass industry. Due to the cheap and abundant supply of natural gas and significant monetary and land grants from the city, Edward Drummond Libbey moved his glass company from Massachusetts to Toledo in 1888. This move lead to the birth of major glass production companies in the area, including some that are still present today — Libbey Glass, Libbey-Owens-Ford (also known as Pilkington North America), Owens-Illinois Inc., and Owens-Corning. Most of the industry leaders were coming from New York and Boston and brought…
