Menstruation is the process in a woman of discharging blood and other materials from the lining of the uterus at intervals of about one lunar month from puberty until menopause, except during pregnancy. It’s a process, that by all accounts should be marveled at. The fact that a woman, who has a healthy cycle, is capable of bringing life into this world should be celebrated. Yet in popular culture and media it has become a punch line.
During puberty, young boys and girls start to experience changes in their bodies. Young girls experience a similar to experience to their male counterparts up until their first menstruation. This is the milestone that changes everything, some girls celebrate their newfound womanhood while others mourn the lose of their childhood innocence. While each response is unique and justified there is another reaction that will affect a young woman 's development, and that is the reaction of those around her.
Some adolescent females are fortunate and have positive influences that will make this transition from girl to woman easier. But then there are others, young boys, grown men, other females, and the ever present media. Menstruation to many of these people is seen as a curse. It is as if women are being punished for their ability to procreate. Contempt, disgust, and shame have become words that are associated with “period”.
Society has come a long way in accepting once taboo topics to mainstream acceptance but yet the “period” is not one of them.…
