In most states parental consent is not required in order to have an abortion. This strips any accountability away from the situation. If the girl does get pregnant no one has to know. However, even if a young woman gets an abortion it does not mean she was never pregnant. It just means the pregnancy was short lived. It is not a solution to the root of the problem and it can make some teens less likely to use proper protection. The root of this problem is that teenagers think that having sex is a fun leisure activity and do not always use protection. If it was mandatory that a child get permission before getting an abortion then the teen would be less likely to get pregnant in order to avoid parental wrath. Providing teens with information is important in the prevention of teen pregnancies. Parents usually save “the birds and the bees” for schools. Assuming that a teenager will learn anything in school is dangerous, but if parents or guardians made sure teens were properly educated on the proper preventive measures the teenage pregnancy rates would steadily drop. Schools used to having mandatory pregnancy prevention classes in order to teach adolescents how to properly use protection but this has declined in many places. This means teens are left to scrounge around for information on sex and usually find this on teen soap operas like Degrassi. Many high school students get a kick out of looking at the pictures of the male and female reproductive organs in their biology textbook. It may seem like it is enough for these young people to know how the human body functions but it is important that teens to know the consequences of their actions from a real-life prospective and not just how the reproductive system. Teens need to have some place they can go to ask questions and get advice. They may ask older siblings, who are usually not mature enough to discuss everything with them, about their previous encounters. Teaching teens how to prevent pregnancy is the first step in reducing the teen parents population.
