Many seniors are at an increased risk for identity theft. The National Crime Prevention Council notes that "senior citizens are more at risk to be targeted by telemarketing scams than other age groups. These dishonest telemarketers direct anywhere from 56 to 80 percent of their calls to the elderly."
In addition to phone scams, many seniors are not as technologically savvy as they should be. They can be taken advantage of online. Typically, this involves providing personal information online.
The Federal Trade Commission reports that of all the complaints they receive, nearly 20 percent are from one demographic on one subject: senior citizens over 60 years of age complaining about identity theft.
